What Stallion for this mare?

i have to say, my PP 3yro is fine temperament wise and the damsire is Criminal Law so supposedly he has a double dose of sharpness!

mine is very easy to do and has a good work ethic, but i think PP may throw a bit big for the OP's requirements

Please do not write things on this forum that are not true. Primitive Proposal did not stop eventing due to his temperament. The reason he stopped was because the eventing season totally clashes with the stud season and he had a full book of mares to cover so had to be home from April until end of August. If a horse is covering over 70 mares a season you can not do both jobs properly, they have to either compete and be available by frozen/chilled semen or stand at stud. Primitive Proposal really has got a lovely nature and always has had. He is at J P Sheffields yard at the moment and JP and all his girls love him.

I cannot comment on who is right about why this horse stopped eventing - it is probably a bit of both. I did however see this horse at his grading last month, indeed ridden by JP. This horse would not be for me, as he does not tick all the boxes on conformation however I was very interested to see him under saddle as I have, like many others read a lot about him on this forum.

Under saddle he is definitely a unhappy beast, he was tactfully ridden to avoid a showdown. He was unable to throw a good shape over a fence when ridden - but loose the shape made was acceptable. When ridden he took little contact with the bridle, was hollow through the back and showed no understanding of the riders aides. This is just my opinion but I can certainly say that JP well earnt his fee on that day - as did Jenette Brakewell on Jazz Time who again showed limited jump (had uprights down 3 times) but was professional produced and wonderfully handled!

PP is producing good progeny - but with the pool of clients through the stud which Louella boast and covering in excess of 70 a year statistics mean that you will have good ones!

What about Weston Justice, nearly TB proven comp. horse with a pedigree to match. Could throw a bit big if your mare has large bloodlines, but she could anyway.

Pootle123 - I was only stating my personal knowledge having seen him compete several times when he was younger as well as having very close contact with many that knew him intimately throughout that time. If this is incorrect then I do apologise, however on all the occasions I saw him, his ridden temperament was difficult. A talented horse without question but difficult to ride. This was exactly the same with at least one of his siblings that I worked with for 5 years....one of the sweetest horses on the ground but incredibly difficult to ride...especially when the work became more demanding. In her case, if she had put one ounce more concentration into her work then she would have been easily a 4star horse but she didn't and on speaking at around the same time with those close to PP, this appeared to be exactly the same and I was told that this was why he retired from competition. In the case of his sibling, she also retired from competition.

If you re-read my post you will also see that I have stated that he appears to have settled with age, what with him obviously having been presented for grading recently as well as being out competing again, and that the temperament and talent of his progeny seems to be unquestionable. So, as you will see, I was not slating him but merely stating what I knew of him and advising that, based on that knowledge that, whilst I would DEFINITELY use him myself, that I would ensure a good temperament on the mare's side.

What about considering Revoltion (TB), ex race horse and Advanced Event Stallion. He only stands 16hh and has fantastic bloodlines. I have a three year old and yearling by him who won the Yearling Young Event horse class at Bramham 2009. He adds real quality and has a fantastic temperament. I will be using him again in 2010
