The it would be I am worried about 'what to wear' and 'how to act', or rather how my horse would act, as I don't know anyone to tag along with first time! Cost would limit me from going more than once a month however.
I have a brilliant pony and, even though I was scared, I loved hunting. I have lost my transport but could afford to hire a lorry about once a month but I can't justify a cap of £70 + fuel + everything else.
Because I'm anti. Just dont agree with killing in the name of sport and before anyone says that its because I dont understand hunting let me just say.
I grew up hunting both mounted and working with terrier men. Was blooded at 6 and have probably been at more 'kills' than most would see in a lifetime. My decision is based on knowledge, not emotion.
A combination of cost, not knowing how to act or what to wear, not being a good enough rider and that Scooby is nowhere near fit enough! It's mostly the last one though, so I ticked "my horse would not cope".
My horse, he is an eventer, he is brilliant at the meet, lovely at the start but when the pace picks up he gets too exxcited, I struggle to hold him before a jump, i'm going to try going out but without doing any jumping.... (his favourite part)
Cost would be a big factor for me, taking out of the equation the fact that right now I don't have a suitable horse.
I was more than a little confused by responses to the related (deleted) post that made a big deal out of objecting to FOX hunting. There are no foxes currently involved in hunting, it is a prelaid scent - hunts may stumble across the odd fox admittedly but in reality it is not now what the exercise is about . Of course that could change in the future but it is not relevant to this poll.
i've just treated myself to a day this season and horse and i loved it - i'd go every week if i could afford it - but i really cant justify spending the money
fyi - i've hunted a lot over the years as a groom/nanny etc but now i own my own horse i can't afford the cap
I went on all the marches and raised money etc. I used to take my whippets Hare Coursing. I thought I would go Autumn Hunting. I have to say that the people out that day were so rude and unfriendly I was really upset and disappointed. The same woman who had collected my subs on the coach to London shrieked at me like a banshee to keep away from her horse (no ribbon on it). I asked a two lots of people if I could tag along as I was a first timer and they just completely blanked me.
At the moment a bronking 4 year old!! Sore back and crap saddle (fitted by saddler I hasten to add) resulted in a very wild day last Sat so horse on bench till next Sat when got different saddle and recovered from physio appointment.
Well at the moment my own horse is too young and not ready for hunting, but my other horse that I have on loan, to be honest I wouldn't want to risk it, you feel more of duty to ensure the horse doesn't get injured etc I suppose and he can throw some huge bucks in when he gets excited, not bothered about my self coming off its just what could happen if he got away etc.
But when I hunted my other lad and another horse for somebody, the cost was always a bit of a bug bear, although it didn't stop me, but because nobody else on our yard goes hunting then i did find it a bit lonely going to meets when you don't know folk, if you don't go weekly then you don't really get to know people, again it didn't stop me going but it would of made me make the effort to go more if I went with people I knew or go to know more people.
the unknown.... I have a cob v placid loves to run with other horses...she must have hunted at somepoint as when the hunt goes by I can't do anything with her for at least 2 days...and I mean anything...I can't even get her in her stable...won't eat properly won't stand won't be tacked up won't let you pick feet out ..anything!!
My vet came to do a lameness test the day after the hunt had been.......no chance...she dragged us both down the drive....
the vet was aghast at her behaviour...couldn't believe I had bought such a wild animal...2 days later she is back to her noemal placid loving self.
so god knows what to expect if she did go with the hunt...

It put me right off.

No wonder it put you off. And who could blame you!
I would say I am anti (although I am aware they 'supposedly' don't hunt foxes in that way now). I again do not agree with killing an animal for sport and don't understand people who do enjoy intentionally ending the life of another animal for 'fun'.
However, my sister and I did take part in a newcomers hunt one day post ban and to be honest we were pretty shocked by the very poor standard of riding that was on display and that was by the so called seasoned hunters. They were cr*p, rode quite dangerously - certainly when it came to jumping - and didn't really have general manners/show common courtesy to other riders. Not my cup of tea and it's no wonder horse are injured/killed when they're ridden how was demonstrated on that day.
I agree that it's no wonder you don't want to go again.
Just for the record though........I am a proper 'townie' London born and bred and had never seen hunt before I went. 99% of the people were lovely and welcoming. You come across the odd knob-head in every sport!
This doesn't take away from the fact it put you off hunting but I don't want others not to go hunting just in case people are rude since that was not my experience.
Used to hunt & both me & horse loved it, however horse got injured & needed putting down. I don't want to lose new horse the same way. Therefore sadly my hunting days are over, but I do try & follow when I can.

I agree that some of the riding on display out hunting is questionable, however no more so than at every sponsored ride and show I have ever been to. I would only go on a horse that I feel like I have control enough to get out of other people's way.
Luckily I'm spoilt and have a super handbrake turn polo pony who also jumps
..........now i just need to find some money and I'm golden
I used to hunt week in week out from age 10 until 5 years ago when I moved up here.
I have been hunting once in Scotland & didnt enjoy it at all. Its usually at least a 2 hour drive to the meet and then the ground was bottomless, with a few boulders about to trip over. The Field were kept so far away from the action that we hardly spied a hound for hours on end and we were charged £60 for the priviledge. It was utterly dull.
I live in wales and the hunting is just not worth the trouble. The ground is bottomless and there is very little jumping. Depending on which hunt you go out with, some are better than others. I watched one hunt master canter straight into a bog which was easy to see, the rest of the pack followed and numerous horses were stuck momentarily.
