What stops you going hunting (again, with cost!)

If you sometimes ask someone else to do your horse for you....does that make you cruel?

blitz its a generalization as its true in general, from what i can see as a sidelooker, most of the people i have seen at hunts are being left behind or are yanking the mouths of thir horses in majority of pictures.

Also from working in stables i have found that the ones who hunt seem to be the people who just land out once in a blue moon to take the horse a pure stage out on the hunt field like mad eejits not concerned about the horse

Now im sure there are alot of good riders who care for and can ride superbly but i think they are out numbered lol

this is just my view.

i have never been hunting, firstly i dont agree killing anything intentionally .....

Have you not heard yet (how many years after the event) that is is now totally illegal to "kill anything intentionally"?

One thing:

I worry about my horse, I would like to say "he is a nice horse" not "he WAS a nice horse". I dont like the cantering on roads, ploughed fields, trotting/cantering down hill. If anything ever happend to him I would never forgive myself.

However, I have been on a few fun rides this year and plan to do more next year, if I can keep him saine I will start the cubbing season and if it gets too silly with ground conditions etc I will just come home!

Other: I don't have a horse! The cost of hirelings is too prohibitive. When i get one i do plan to give it a go though! I also follow on foot occasionally.

Not much, I love hunting!

The only thing that stops me is when the ground is water logged and it’s cancelled, boo!

Mostly cost, for me - I have hunted and I keep my horse on a hunting yard, but I just can't afford it. When I was at uni, I could go for £20 a day, so I did a season then but I can't justify it now, although I appreciate where the money goes.

But I would also say the attitude of some hunting people - I know there are lots of lovely people at most meets but my personal experience was pretty lonely and intimidating. I wouldn't mind going to the childrens meet as that was more friendly but the rest of the time, I'm not paying through the nose for that kind of reception.

The only reason i don't go at the moment is there are no meets near enough for me to hack to, otherwise I would go all the time! Used to live in the countryside so there were lots of meets nearby I could hack to, didn't mind if it would take a few hours to get there I'd still go! Now alas I live in suburbia and as I have no transport I just can't get to the few hunt meets relatively nearby. Am saving up for a 4x4 and trailer next year so then there'll be no stopping me!

The cost. Though at the moment thats not an issue as Im qualifying a hunter for someone so no cost involved for me. It is however the main reason I wouldnt get out hunting. I do hope to have 2 horses next Autumn/winter to justify the costof subscription.

firstly the cost local hunt are on an estate this weekend which is open daily to the public for £15 this sat £60 as the hunt are there secondly dont like the predictability now as its a drag hunt essentially they lay the trail over the route they want loved the challenge of proper hunting following the scent wherever jumping all in front of you ditches/hedges /gates/walls oh happy memories

I hunt whenever i can, fortunatly i still count as a pc member so only pay £20 each time, however this adds up greatly over a season and therefore i cant afford to hunt more than once each month. My mum would love to go again., but with costs high it is too much to pay out for simply a few hours which is all they ever seem to do these days. For the amount to pay for a cap we can have 7 lessons, a couple of competitions etc.

My hubby stops me hunting more often than I do. He doesn't actually say anything, but I know he'd be annoyed if I spent every weekend hunting.

That said, I only go with Bloodhounds, so the cap is cheaper. I couldn't justify the expense for a full cap with Foxhounds twice a month.
