Im feeding my 17.2hh 13yrs wb x
eve- 1 round scoop alfa a oil
1 round scoop micronised barley
1 round scoop soaked sugar beet
snack a ball with 1/2 scoop conditioning cubes

morn- 1/2 round scoop alfa a oil
1/3 round scoop micronised barley
1/3 round scoop conditioning cubes
nearly 1 round scoop soaked sugar beet

He is on ad lib very good quality hayledge overnight and since the snow probably half a alfa bag of hayledge- about 4 kg.

He was doing well on this until the snow has stopped his grass intake, I cant put any more hayledge out in the field as he leaves it when first turned out and my greedy chunky other horse eats it.

Im coming to the end of my tub of benevit advance and am wondering weather to get the same again or to try;

365 supplement
pink powder
Something else that wont cost a fortune!

I've used top spec before and found it did nothing apart from cost a fortune as he is 700kg!

Whats everyone rate?

i'd swap the barley for bailey no.4 topline cubes - not sure which conditioning cubes you are talking about, but give him more of them! They have been amazing and revolutionised the way my scrawny TB looked when i got him. Saw a difference within 2 weeks and he looked perfect by 4 weeks! I wouldn't faff around with supplements really, you're better off buying a good hard feed.

Also just bear in mind teeth and worming.

I was about to say TopSpec because my boy looked great on that so I guess you have to work what is best for your horse....
365 is OK but cant say it made much difference to mine. I was expecting great things reading all the marketing lit....

A girl on my yard with a big lanky TB gives him Coolstance copra - it's a coconut-based feed that comes as a powder that you mix with water to make a kind of mash (sorry if that's general knowledge and I'm treating you like you're stupid, but I hadn't heard of it before). He keeps his condition really well on it, and it makes his coat loooovely and soft and shiny. Plus it doesn't make him fizzy and hyper. We've been giving it to all the horses since the snow, to keep condition on them til the grass comes back, and they all love it.

I'm a touch confused by your wording. Do you mean he is having approx 4kg of hayalge overnight, and nothing during the day? If so, 4kg is a terribly small amount for a horse that size. My 16hh fatty gets more than that

For a horse that size I would be looking at feeding *at least* 3 times that in haylage (my 16.2 eats approx 17kg in 24hrs, some times more!)

I would also be concerned that barley and sugar beet have little nutritional value, and in fact amount to very little in hard feed. (a scoop of barley is very light, and a scoop of soaked sugar beet is largely water). As a very rough guide, I would be looking to feed:

1 scoop of conditioning cubes
1 scoop of Alfa A
1 scoop of soaked sugar beet
1 cup Baileys outshine

Twice a day. Or if at all possible, break it down to 3 feeds a day, but I understand that it not always practical.

First of all id be feeding a LOT more haylage. I was under the impression 'ad lib' meant as much as they could eat. And 4kg to me, is certainly not enogh. its more or less what id give my 14hh 18 month old. Whenever any of ours look scrawny, i pump them with as much haylage as i they will eat.
Other than that, id feed as puppy reccommended.

Agree with previous suggestions ^^^ Feed adlib haylage/hay to fulfill his digestive requirements and forage intake alongside the hard feed. If he was currently managing fine on the current hard feed, why not think about a digestive supplement?
My TB can be a poor doer and requires lots of conditioning cubes, alfalfa, sugar beet and oil but since talking to a nutritionist and adding a digestive supplement, it has really helped to settle his gut and help maximise the efficiency of the feed he is getting, so much so that I have now ben able to cut it down a bit. I have noticed a big difference.
I use and would recommend the Dengie digestive supplements. Good Luck!

I put my TB on pink powder a while back and he has improved no end, actually managing to keep weight on! This is the first winter he's been on it and he's doing brilliantly, hardly dropped any weight, shiny coat, and no scurfy skin, result!

Thanks guys!

First of all, he's on ad lib hayledge overnight his net is never finished and he has fresh given to him every day - he probably gets 4kg of what I put out in the day.

Puppy- the feed you suggested is what he gets lol! apart from a scoop of barley in place of the conditioning cubes- but he has the cubes in his ball.

Last year I fed conditioning cubes instead of barley but he didnt hold his weight as well as he has this year which is why I tried the barley.

I was wondering which balancer/ supplement to give him!

SunnyDaze, good suggestion, thanks I'll look into it along with the other suggestions I wasnt aware of, in the meantime I'll put more nuts in his overnight ball- if his breakfast is too big he wont eat it as he gets excited about going in the field!

Thanks all

I'm afraid that your wording is no more clear in this post

I still don't understand, how many kgs of haylage does your horse eat in 24 hours?

I know the feed I suggested is *similar* sounding to what you said, but there is in fact a fair difference:

eve- 1 round scoop alfa a oil
1 round scoop micronised barley
1 round scoop soaked sugar beet
snack a ball with 1/2 scoop conditioning cubes

morn- 1/2 round scoop alfa a oil
1/3 round scoop micronised barley

= per day:
450gm Alfa A
1.15 kg Barley
2 scoops wet SB (can't remember the weight of that off the top of my head)
1.6 kg Conditioning cubes

= 2.75 KG hard feed + 450gm chaff & 2 wet sugar beet

What I suggested =
2 scoops/600gm Alfa A
2 scoops/3.9kg Conditioning Cubes
2 cups/600gms Bailey's outshine
2 scoops wet SB

= 4.5kg hard feed, + 600gm chaff & 2 wet sugar beet
