what supplement to use for stiffness

what supplements do you feed your horses if they are stiff behind in the hocks? can you just add oil (vege/sunflower/cod liver??) to their feed or are there special ones out there?
 
I use Suppleaze Gold, by Aviform. In all the horse books. Very competitive price and really works. A friend who lectures at Warwickshire College researched all the joint supplements and found this the best in terms of pure ingredients, effectiveness etc., :)
 
One of my boys has slight arthritis in his hocks. I feed him Cortaflex and in really cold weather he wears stable chaps to help to keep his joints warm which seems to help. :)
 
Always used cortaflex with mine. Tried cheaper ones but none of them seemed to work at all really.

Have also seen devils claw used with good results... is a bit cheaper and more natural.

Not sure of the effects of oils on stifness? But I never use codliver oil, seems stupid to feed horses something they would never eat.... horses dont eat fish!!! lol
 
I had mine on cortaflex HA for ages and it did nothing (except bankrupt me!)

He's now been on codlivine supple joint oil for a year or so and I can honestly say it's made a world of difference!!

You should try out a few (but remember to give them 6 weeks or so to load up) as each is different

Another vote for this one. My gelding is more supple at 20 than what he was at 12!
 
I use MSM on my boy who had a long period of box rest, causing stiffness. I got mine from Equine America, the same people who make cortaflex, but MSM is a lot cheaper! He is also on devils claw(we use this more for his injury, although it helps with stiffness too) and flax oil. It has worked wonders, none of them are very expensive either :)

He he this made me giggle. They don't eat fish naturally in the wild, but of course, there is a cortaflex bush they can access.....

Sorry sorry, not being mean, just having visions of my lot sitting by our river with a fishing rod..... :D :D

Ha ha i see your point!! There's just something that doesnt sit right with me about the cod liver oil. Especially when you can feed something like vegetable oil or sunflower oil which would be more natural too them. I know the cortaflex isnt natural but its not easily replaced by something natural. If you get me??? Garhhhh I know what I mean!!! lol

Ill go sit in a darkened room for abit and sort my brian out! :p
