What temperature do you remove rugs?

Please forgive me if this has been discussed many times before. My son's anglo arab has started to drop a little weight although seeming to be in perfect health and I think it may be time to remove her rug. It's quite warm during the day at the moment and this week isn't forecast to fall below 9 or 10 degrees during the night. I was just wondering when others remove their horses rugs (obviously if we remove it, it will go back on if the weather deterioates again).

To be honest, if she's dropping weight, I would be inclined to leave the rug on as if she does get cold, she'll drop more weight. Generally, about Easter Hols is when ours used to come off as that's when started to notice a difference.

I've had to bring one in tonight as she was shivering and although the Highland hasn't been rugged, the weather here has been brutal and she's now got a MW on tonight.

Today, it's very warm and the field is in full sun, I don't need my coat on, so I took the horses' rugs off. :D I have one TB, one anglo-arab and an arab. The anglo feels the cold more than the other two and she also has the worst/thinnest winter coat of the three (they are just starting to moult).

They will all have their rugs (Bucas smartex rain) back on this evening.

Thanks Mishaspey and Faracat. I should have mentioned that we're in the south of France. The temperature was 15 degrees today dropping down to about 10 degrees tonight with similar temperatures forecast for the next 5 days.

Well hunting finished yesterday for us so Jack has started to be roughed off, in the day he is out in heavy weight turn out, but we have taken one off in stable so he is down to 2 quited stable rugs now instead of 3. If it warms up a bit this week he will have a rug on in field with no neck, we aim to have him out 24/7 by middle of April.

Ours came off on Friday it's in double figures now during the day! Lightweights back on today as rain :(. Next week will take off again as forcast is good. They are still in at night until the end of the month.

Just because we are feeling the cold doesn't mean our horses are. They generally come with their own inbuilt rugs (ie winter coat) which works perfectly well!

Most of the horses at my yard are out during the day with their rugs off right now. Unless they are clipped or sensitive, or about to go to a show, they are generally unrugged, and happy to have the sun on their backs and have a good scratch and roll. Exceptions are when it's chucking it down with rain, then a rainsheet will go on.

My horse has been out without a rug for ages now. He's quite happy, and perfectly capable of moving around to keep warm (unlike being in a stable for example). He isn't clipped, has his winter coat, and enjoys mutual grooming with his unrugged field mates.

If your horse is dropping weight, I would look at feed vs work, access to grass and hay, check there are no underlying health issues etc.

Each horse is different, if you feel she is getting to hot then leave the rug off...
One of mine has a hunter clip and is out during the day naked when the sun is out, otherwise she`s got a lightweight on, she isnt cold, she isnt dropping weight, if anything I have under rugged all winter to get some of the summer weight off but nope she`s stayed the same all winter .... too many people over rug their horses

Mine (fully clipped) is in a rain sheet today as although it is much warmer it was only 2 deg when I turned her out and there is a bit of a chilly breeze, tonight she will be in a fleece, and then sweetitch hoody tomorrow. Anthing of 10 and above and I start to question wether she'll need a rug. If she didn't need her sweetitch rug then from looking at the weather forecast I think it would be a naked week!

I usually go by the weather rather than the temperature. If the sun is shining the rugs come off - even when there is a foot of snow on the ground! (One of mine is a TB btw, so I'm not just refering to hairy ponies!) If it's windy and/or raining I'll then rug depending on the horse and the temperature. It can be trial and error at times until you get to know your horse but generally if they feel warm enough (just warm enough - not overly toasty!) then you know they're fine. Obviously you have to be more careful with a fully clipped horse but I do think a lot of people over-rug and horses can drop weight from being too warm as well as too cold. As long as they have plenty to eat (so hay in the field if there isn't enough grass) and it's not wet then I think most horses are happier without. :)

Both mine are out today without the rugs (nice and sunny here in Yorkshire) it was lovely to see them both this morning grooming each other....mouths full of hair :D

Not looking forward to seeing how dusty they will be this evening, but a good roll around naked will do them the world of good.

Mine are out today without rugs on it was a bit of a chilly start but now 11 degrees they are all itchy and trying to push their coats.
They have plenty of hay to eat and seem hapier without the rugs on.

Although I always have my eye on the temperature I don't take it into account at all when I take blankets off. If a horse looks cold or is dropping weight then I blanket them and up the feed, if they seem happy then I don't. I take it day by day, horse by horse.

It is getting warm here now, daytime temps are about 5C, nights are around, or just below zero. As long as it isn't freezing rain or dreadfully windy most of mine are naked now. Even in mid winter with temps at -15C, if the sun was shining blankets would come off for a few hours.

Not paying attention to timings, its how the weather looks. My gelding is still fully rugged as I had clipped him out completely. My old mare had a high bib clip so I took advantage of the sun on Saturday and chucked her out rugless. Vain attempt to get some of the hair out as i am fed up with being covered. Both are now in one heavyweight stable rug at night though with a sheet underneath - though that has been upped to a fleece on a couple of evenings when frost threatened.

Mine are all out without rugs today even my fully clipped Spanish boy.
I work from home so i can put rugs on if needed, but there only in light weights anyway the clipped Spanish is a very warm horse.

Ours are naked in the day and in rainsheets at night at the moment. It may be that your mare has been too warm underneath her rug and has lost weight that way OP, as another poster mentioned.

Mine went out naked on Saturday and took full advantage of the sunshine :) It was v chilly and a tad windy when he went outt his morning so is in 200g with no neck. I would imagine we'll alternate between mw / lw / naked as best suits him :)

Mine has been naked during the day for the last week - unclipped.

I tend to rug when it is consistantly below 10 degrees. So I apply the same rule in the spring.

If your horse is prone to dropping weight, a rainsheet should be sufficient for keeping the chill off at this time of year IMO...

If they have all their fur on then at these temps (11 ish C) rugs off.

My mare is an IDxTB with a hunter clip and during the day at the mo she has a lightweight rain sheet and lycra hoodie and at night same + a lightweight night rug.

Sorry - v lazy - during the week I just throw the night rug over the top if the turnout is dry. Recently she has been in a MW turnout and I have just left this on 24/7 but feel the rain sheet thing is way too thin for night at the moment - it was -2 this morning at 6am.
