What the hecks a "wip wop"

a short length of soft rope you hold and flick from side to side to encourage forwards movement.

it did used to get starred out on this forum so just checking wip wop....

I've got a wip wop. I got it from the Intelligentshorsmanship website.....they are sometimes called a giddy up rope too. Basically its a soft but thick wool type material with a hand loop to put on your wrist and a feathered end. Its used to encourage forward movement on the ground or in the saddle. Its a good visual aid and if you do need to up the pressure, its not severe like a whip. Richard Maxwell does one too but it seems much thinner.
 
Rope, sometimes knotted, used as a whip or cue substitute by Parelli. You will find it in Parelli threads here but may get yourself in deep water.
I do not own a horse and do not do Parelli - but part of my rider education was to learn about lots of different trainers and my grand daughter had some brilliant Parelli style lessons - Ground work followed by bareback riding. No wip wop for her. Just a lead rope and head collar.

Ah yes the rein thing I know about - as in both in one hand and side to side? But had never heard of the other..... every day is a learning day!
 
I have to use reins in this manner on my western backed cob. She has no idea what legs are for (can give the biggest pony club kick ever and nothing) but wip wop-ing the reins encourages her forward. I remember seeing Kelly Mark's using a giddy up rope to teach a horse to gallop. I think the psychology behind I'd is something to do with the withers being when large cats would grab a horse so natural instinct is to scootch forwards. Could be wrong on that tho!

Piggy whipping with the reins.

Not something I’ve had to do either and yes the rope was supposed to be the “kinder” option

First time riding in France, I took a week-long "day camp" kind of thing... only adult with a class full of adolescent girls, so lots of games to make the exercises interesting.

"Race from one side of the arena to the other and back again, only at trot" with crops confiscated. On a lazy horse.

I quickly re-invented the "wip wop" technique with the reins for myself.
 
😂😂 I commented to someone recently needed one for little ex racer... she laughed and said if I got one could she film his reaction!

So I genuinely thought their purpose was to waft horse flies off 😳😂
I now understand her laughing, I’d be killed instantly
 
I've got one of the aforementioned items. Think it may be spelled as "Whip-Whop" to deflect any perceived racist issues......... :)

VERY useful little piece of kit, especially if you are riding something like a youngster where you don't want one hand to be tied up holding a whip and need all hands on board. Also useful for a sticky horse who's been there and done it with crops and knows how to evade the leg, and the whip-whop comes as a bit of a surprise to them!

You can make your own, but need to consider what material your using (I tried one with bailer twine, just wasn't the same!). I managed to pick up the one I've got cheap on e-bay. Might be worth looking there if you want to try one, or it just might be the sort of thing that turns up at a horsey car-boot!

The whip-whop, isn't to hit the horse with! The rider moves the device (like the cut end of a lead rope) from side to side in and out of the horse's eye-line to enccourage forward movement. We don't have one but i have used a lead-rope in a circular motion behind a horse to persuade it to load, which is the same principle

Ah, I understand it better, now. I was thinking that it was tapping on the horse's shoulder.

I used to use a frayed cotton leadrope with the clip removed and a knot at the end you hold.

I made one with an old lead rope and it worked wonders with a nappy mare who planted with whip or strong leg aids.
It helped get her out of the habit of saying no to requests.

I haven’t felt a need to use it for the last 7 or 8 years with other horses.

it's the only thing that worked on my young mare who had totally switched off, and ignored the leg, spurs and whip. I'd never heard of it before, and have trained a lot of horses. I hope I never have one as bad again, but I only had to use it for a week.
