What things do you do with your horse, which you probably shouldn't?!

I was thinking about this today as I put my boy's bridle on over the stable door! :eek: :o This is not something I would do with any other horse but I know my boy very well and he doesn't mind. He also lets me crawl under his belly in the stable instead of going round the other side! :p

So what do you do with your horses which isn't necessarily BHS correct?
 
I don't bolt the stable door when I'm tacking up and need to pop back into the tackroom to fetch something. I also let go of the reins while I clamber onto the huge mounting block that has no step. So far she hasn't bogged off.
 
might be quicker to ask me what things I do with mine that the BHS wouldn't have a fit if they saw me... :D
 
I bring him in without headcollar
I leave him stood in school whilst I put the jumps up
I ride him backwards when I get bored
I ride him out to field bareback without headcollar
I don't shut stable door when I'm around

There's loads more- I suppose you could say I trust him too much :p :D
 
i dont always hold my reins when im faaffing about trying to get on.

i let go of her in full tack while im putting poles away.

i put her bridle and saddle over the door.

i walk/stand behind her. and scratch the base of her back like that too.... i was squished once too haha (i know her well i can say move and she will) :)

i DO NOT wear boots for jumping at home...

i dont wear boots EVER for flatwork.

I feed my horse box standard chaff (costs £5 and last 3 months) the nutritionist says she looks fab :D

I use a leadrop to put out and bring in... once i just guided her with polos :D

I stand behind her in the field while im adjusting her rug. :o





that is all. i will never do BHS exams as id fail it all.

I do all of these haha. ;) + I go underneath my horse, squeeze in a little gap behind his bum, jump off when he's moving :o
 
I was jumping with jockey length stirrups on my old lad the other day, pretending I was in a very slow, cob version of the grand national...
 
Oh god, I've probably broken just about every rule in the book!

I ride her back from the field in a headcollar with no hat on. If she's in the field where you have to cross two other fields to get back to the yard, I always canter.

I hardly ever tie her up so she just wanders round the yard while I get ready.

I sit cross legged in front of her and lean against her forelegs when she eats her dinner.

I never shut her stable door when she's in and I'm doing stuff around the yard.

I ride in cut off jeans and converse.

I ride with my reins on the buckle all the time, even on roads.

I occasionally sneak on the football field for a gallop.

I occasionally sneak in the farmer's field for a gallop.

I occasionally hug her bottom (don't ask :p).

I quite frequently crawl underneath her when I'm grooming.

I hack bareback. We once did a 4 hour hack with no saddle, and yes there were roads.

I could go on....we do always where hi viz though :p

I will quite happily crawl underneath him, especially when I'm mucking out, saves a bit of time :D

Eer, ride him bareback and bridleless in the field in the SNOW :eek:

Hm.. I do tons of stuff other people say isn't safe.. I say the opposite! :P The more crazyness you put your horse through, the more used he gets to crazyness and the safe he gets! The more trust you show him, the more responsibility he takes. :P

  • I put him out loose in the barn with all doors open when I tack him up.
  • I might leave him with some tack on, still loose, while getting stuff I forgot to take with me.
  • I get off on the trails, hang the reins on the saddle and have him walk with me without holding him. I may even run off and I expect him to follow.
  • I ride him bareback in a halter to the pasture.
  • I ride one horse to the pasture with the other two in ropes beside me.
  • I put his hoof on a chair and I sit down on the floor when putting a lost shoe back on.
  • I hack out in a halter and bareback.
  • I've taught him to rear.
  • I let him run free with no fences and ''play'' with him.
  • Probably lots more I can't think of now..

However I will always use a helmet (only exception is when taking medieval photos.. soon as camera is off, helmet is on) and I will use reflective gear when going out in r near traffic, and when it's the least dark or dusky out.

Forgot to add:

I ride in whatever I wore to college that day ranges from mini skirts to jeans
I vault on him when bored
We play naughts and crosses on him using chalk
 
Push the wheelbarrow UNDER his tum when mucking out with him in the stable.

Position steps directly behind him to stand on when clipping above his tail.

Too many riding misdemeanours to even mention ! :o

Lol!!! I do pretty much all of these!!

Tho instead of riding on the buckle, I always neckrein (v bad habit lol) and his stable door is WIDE open when I'm in the vicinity of his stable (there's a few people have a fit about this lol they're determined that he's gonna make a run for it :-P)

Tho at home with my mums youngsters and broodmares I am always careful (probably because she'd absolutely KILL me if she caught me doing anything so lax :-D)

I'll also change his rug in the field with no headcollar on and I am frequently known to school bareback in a headcollar with no hat...

God these are adding up lol- I'm sure there's probably hundreds more lol!!!
 
i remember coming fresh from horsey college and trying desperately to remember all the BHS approved techniques... got my first job in a trekking centre and when I got my hat and gloves out to fetch the horses the YO allmosts wet their pants - chucked me up on a horse and gave me 8 horses to lead back from the field ... 4 on each side :)

I taught Dylan to let me stand on his back. In my socks. At the field gate. In a turnout rug and a headcollar. With nobody else there.

But it's ok, I had a hat on :D
 
Where do I start?

* I crawl under Corrie all the time.
* I put the wheelbarrow in the stable whilst I muck out, with Corrie still in the stable.
* I kneel on the floor next to her whilst doing bandages.
* I use a very stiff dandy brush on her clipped parts in winter.
* I put the leadrope between my knees whilst I lock the field gate.
* I do her rug in the middle of the field with her loose.
* If I get hot whilst out hacking I will remove my hi-viz tabard, my coat, my jumper, put the coat back on, then hi-viz back on, then tie jumper round my waist whilst she walks along the road with the reins looped over my whip tucked under my leg.
* I have been known to bring her in from the field, (1/2 mile up the road from the yard) with the rope over her neck.
* I take her headcollar off on the yard and let her take herself into her stable.

And hundreds more that I won't bore you all with.
 
un clip him and point at his stable and tell him to go
ride him to the field bareback
wander up behind him and pat his bum
hadly ever lead him unless he is in a stupid mood
cool down with no stirups or reins
dont hold the reins when getting on (people who saw him when I got him know what he was like and cant believe he is now like this)
get off by swinging my leg over the front
play silly games with him
put his boots on sitting in front of his legs

I did this once on a hack on my old ex racer. I'd only shortened one stirrup when he turned into a snorting, plunging Red Rum look-a-like
I never tried again - I galloped him once, and not full out and the power was incredible but the speed... :eek:
 
I'm currently trying to think of something i do that would be approved by the BHS lol. i just do things 'my way'. (i have done BHS exams tho, which probably makes it worse)
 
I thought i was the only one that puts the lead rope in funny places while doing up the gate lock, over shoulder, between knees etc and this is with the livery horses. With my own i just don't hold him. If he doesn't graze he jst stands there watching and waiting....actually i leave him loose a lot he is either happy to be with me or stupid and thinks he is still tied up!

I do most of the above as well, i know there could be a time when you 'come a cropper' but only then would i change probably.
 
Lots of things but the ones that come to mind right now are -

Let the oldie wander out to and in from field on her own

Not tying her up while doing rugs etc

Leaving stable doors undone so they can come and watch while we're doing feeds

Sitting down to brush his face while the shire x is eating his hay

With my last horse I would sit between her and the oldie while they ate, until the oldie spooked at something and jumped straight over me - never again :eek:

Oh and also with my last horse I would lie under her legs to clip them, I trusted that she wouldn't move but wouldn't nec. recommend it xx
 
I crawl under them, feed them biscuits, clip everything and i mean everyting off, my boy has got all PINK stuff! have in the past ridden hatless, often ride in trainers, feed bran, oh the list in endless!!
 
I think my trust is sometimes misplaced lol. I am quite picky and bhs about a lot of stuff when it comes to management, but i do let the old mare just walk in from the field to her stable on her own. 99% of the time she goes straight in. But if anyone is around to see she leads me on a merry dance round the yard. I also always take Oscs bridle off in the yard after a ride and give him a really good head scratch before putting his headcollar on. Again, if anyone is around he decides that's the day he's going to leg it!

Sat on him for ages bareback no hat and no bridle/ headcollar the other day for a cuddle as he's going on thursday. He was really sweet, just dozing with me lying on his neck with my arms around him.
