What things do you do with your horse, which you probably shouldn't?!

- Climb on my friend's horse, bareback without a helmet or shoes, stand up, and leap off him into a river.
- Ride down the road in my togs/swimmers (you do get odd looks from people going past when you're riding in a bikini and jods!)
- Use the grass verge at my uni yard for galloping. We didn't have anywhere else!
- Racing my friend on two ex-racers (I'd borrowed a TB, hers was an STB, I won by a mile...)
- Riding through the middle of a city to go through a drive-thru on horses. We didn't quite make it as Spook (TB ex-racer in above comment) melted down, so we went home.
- Dealing with horses without wearing shoes (most people in NZ don't wear shoes in summer....although this has stopped now Tally is shod again)
- Making obstacle courses out of pool noodles and boogie boards for Tally to jump.

Er...I think that's plenty for the time being...

I sit down on the floor in front of his chest when clipping and put his front legs over my shoulder to clip in between them ( one at a time obviously ;) ) and then when it comes to do inbetween the back legs i sit behind him and put his tail over my shoulder so i dont cut it off!! ( bear in mind he is only 32" ) It hurts your back when clipping something so small, im quite a contorsionist when it comes to clipping!!

I don't think I do much the BHS way:

Change rugs in the field with horses loose.
Lead them in from the field and then unclip ropes in the yard and they let themselves into their stables.
Let them rub their heads on me.

Probably worst crime was when I was clipping on my own two weeks ago, it started to rain so I clipped Saffy in her stable with my head torch on and was kneeling on the floor clipping her belly and inbetween her back legs!

Loving this thread...

I let my po follow me in from the field /menage /yard gate without holding him.

I sit on the floor when washing his feathers for a show (it takes ages and bending over makes my back hurt)...

I swing my leg over his head when getting off...(almost always)

I have play fights with my old fella where I grab his tongue and he bashes me with his nose...

I use my little pony to lean on when chatting with friends.

Lots of others I'm sure but can't think of any now

I thought i was the only one that puts the lead rope in funny places while doing up the gate lock, over shoulder, between knees etc and this is with the livery horses. With my own i just don't hold him. If he doesn't graze he jst stands there watching and waiting....actually i leave him loose a lot he is either happy to be with me or stupid and thinks he is still tied up!

I would just leave her with the rope over her neck, or over the gate, but the field gate leads straight out onto the road, and is just off a bend so I do need to have a tiny bit of control over her.

Two more,
* I either kneel on the floor, or sit on an upturned bucket whilst clipping her belly.
* Whilst clipping round her armpits, I loop her front leg round my leg and manovure my leg around to position her leg as needed.

i ride along with reins on neck sorting myself out
on the way home trot up hill with no reins or stirrups with arms out like an areoplane
when he doesn't want to be caught chase him and after about a min he gets bored and stops :P
ride along no reins and wipping the branches and bushed with my whip
when riding with my mum she taps him on the bum with her stick
clip my hat on his breastlate when get hot when riding so can get my jumper off

there are lots more but that will do heheheh :D

I used to drink cups of tea whilst in a lesson:o

I like to hug his bum and stick my hands under his rug at the back-he feels like suede since he's been clipped.

I always leave the lead rope and just guide him with his headcollar and slap his bum to make him get in the school.

I bring him in with no lead rope.

I'm quite good at remembering how to do things properly and got a student through her GCSE PE riding with my horse, making sure she followed the BHS regulations-I never do it myself! I'm on the video at length, twisting my hair anxiously! :D

Go through the McDonald's drive through on him
Buy him an ice cream at shows if he's been good
Lean tools against him when I'm mucking out or sweeping the yard
Jump ANYTHING I find out hacking - picnic tables, playground equipment...

Lots more that I can't think of at the moment

:)

i cant break most of the rules at my yard in winter a they would shoot me but in summer when shes at home i change rug without tying her up and so does my mum with her as she is much easier to handle when loose.

i also do alot of neck reining on hacks, unless ive decided its a schooling hack then we do some nice leg yeild down the road. horses should have indicators

when i get on her in the school i just stand her next to the mounting block then i dont have to touch the reins again till she all sorted and weve started moving of

i do alot of standing behind her to but shes a mare whos in season alot so i hav alot of cleaning to do bk there and i cant see from the side so bottoms to bhs lol

I sit on the floor to groom my youngsters legs, have done since he was a yearling :P
leave my mares door open and bugger off across the yard to fill her nets leaving her looking out at the world. She never goes anywhere..
Feed them all sorts, Pony likes to have a taste of whatevers going and is often partial to earl grey tea.

I forgot about this one but it's pretty funny - when Lou was in the field behind our house I quite often used to go and see her in my PJs (with nothing else on over the top :p). My dad once snapped a photo of me climbing back over the fence in my PJs and flip flops with fly spray in hand....is there anything BHS about this image:

I am far far too trusting of Hovis - ironically i don't do most of these with Sid as he's far more twitchy.

I lead him without a leadrope all the time (when the YO isn't around!!)
Leave him wandering about tacked up in the school when I'm moving poles etc
I have been known to sit underneath him on the lorry whilst putting his travel boots on.
I muck out with him in the stable with all the gear in there - he helps by passing me the brush on command.
I go up behind him all the time
Take his rugs off and change them in the field with no headcollar on (I have been known to do it in a gale force wind!)
I walk him out to the field with him in one hand and my wheelbarrow etc in the other.

I think it is about knowing your horse and knowing what you can get away with. I would never do these things with horses I don't know or horses I don't trust the way I trust him. I've had Sid for longer but I am much more careful around him as he is a tad more unpredictable.

hehe... this looks like me in the morning... apart fromm... i sometimes go barefoot :eek::eek::o

yes.. change rugs in the field,

go under my boys tummy

i think my worse one is the fact he loves to just walk round the yard, when i go to make up his feed, he comes into the feed room with me and has a fish around for any spare bit of food lying around :o:D

I'm so glad i'm not the only non BHSer.

I let one horse wander around the yard with the front gate wide open because i know he's too scared to go that way.

I feed them whatever i happen to be eating

I get on in the stable if it's raining so i don't get a wet bum, at work mind, mine don't go out in the rain ;)

I text and facebook whilst riding, daily

In the mornings i always do them in pyjamas and dressing gown, just have to make a dive for cover if anyone drives down the lane. Have ridden in pyjamas too but had joggers on top

Change rugs in field minus headcollar

I worked for a sjer and with 6 horses on to tack up on a lorry i learnt some pretty un BHS ways of doing things in a tight space but you do have to know the horses you're dealing with. I used to sit on the tack locker shelf thing to put a bridle on an 18hh stallion

I go to the yard all thime in my PJ's - Sods law I was wearing them the day I broke my hand and had to go to A&E :-( I'm sure they get folk in PJ's all the time but not ones covered in mud !!!

Neck reining
Bare back riding
wrapping the lead rein round my arm as I tie the gate back up
letting her go as I change jumps (she normally just follows me about getting in the way)
Feeding her chocolate - not all the time (she loves it , once stole a mars bar from a child at a show oopps)

Always wear a hat tho - but not when I was younger, oh tales from days of old are much more exciting than the above :-)

I do everything that I shouldn't...too long to list am afraid...b0ll0ck5 to the BHS and their stupid rules

I say this too!

The other day I was hacking down the lane on the way home from a nice ride, on the buckle end while revising from notes!

I also
Rug with out being tied up
Rug by throwing the rug over, or just pulling it off
Clip while sitting on the floor
Crawl under him
Loosen girth on way home while feet out of stirrups and on the buckle end...

list is endless!

My old girl (when i was a wee child!):-

Crawl under her belly/sit crossed leg under belly

Walk to her in the field, put her headcollar on, get on (no hat) and canter up field and then ride her the rest of the way in.

Feed her allsorts on sweets/sarnies/crisps.

Rest broom etc against her in stable whilst i was mucking out.

Ride for miles with JRT who had to climb aboard and sit on front of saddle when crossing main roads.

Change rugs/groom/pull mane/trim ears etc in field, loose.

Canter on every grass verge i could find (even if only 2 strides!) and then continue cantering up the road as i couldn't stop her!

Never bolted stable door.

My current girly:-

Canter on grass verges!

Never bolt door.

Sit on floor to groom legs.

Stand behind her and hug her incredibly scrummy connie backside!

Feed her all sorts - buscuits/crisps etc

Ride on the buckle, on roads!

Text whilst riding

FB whilst riding

Smoke whilst riding!

Terrible - but all good fun!!:D

1) Never do the chin clip up on my headcollar.
2) When leading her wven in a bridle generally I'm not holding onto her, reins/rope is around her neck.
3) Stable door is wide open when I am around on the yard!
4) I cross pick her feet.. I.e stand on the left but do both the front feet then the back without swapping sides..
5) I clipped her in the middle of the yard, not tied up..
6) Never clip my leg straps up or fold the rug in half to put it on the BHS way I just wing it on and pray!
7)I ring the farrier when her feet look long, it could be 8 - 9 weeks before they get to that stage :o
8) Always leave her loose in tack to set up/put away poles
9) Don't jump her in boots
10) Have a quick fag!
11) Been known to ring people/text/check fb out on a hack!
12) Wear headphones out hacking :o :o

I am sure there are many more!

1) 5) I clipped her in the middle of the yard, not tied up..

I clipped mine last year standing in the tack room, not tied up as it was the only place it was light and had electricity. This is the beast I was told could not be clipped without full sedation etc ;)

I'm also another "aeroplaner" - regularly get odd looks from cars / other hackers, cantering round the track and they look at you like you're mad! Tack is optional, mine are both trained to rear on command (under saddle / on the ground), I regularly ride sidesaddle / backwards when I'm bored, standing up on their backs in the field, jumping off in canter, pony club style (if only I could jump back on too!)... Spend a lot of time playing with umbrellas and other scary items on the ground and on their backs too. I think I'm the yard eccentric ;)

Oh and I bribe one of them to jump clear in return for a mars bar when we compete!

-Don't tie him up when I pick out his feet and wash his legs off.
-Sit under his belly when I put bandages/leg wraps on him.
-Leave him standing in the middle of the yard when I realize I've forgotten my spurs or something.
-Hardly ever use a headcollar, he either follows me, or I keep a hand under his chin.
-Change his rugs in the middle of the field.
-I like to sit and have a cuddle with Bruce if he's lying down!
-I facebook and text whilst I'm on Bruce!
-I feed Bruce anything from toffee popcorn to pear drops to prawn cocktail crisps....he loves a slurp of sprite out my hand!
-If it's summer I do the yard in wellies and a bikini!
-When I had 2 ponies I used to do a bareback ride and lead up to/back from the field using a leadrope round the neck of the one I was leading only!!
-Donkeys years when we still had shoes on them, and they needed studs, I'd sit under their belly to do their front ones and let him rest his foot on my knee so I didn't have to hold it!!
-And my first little pony I used to vault onto him, lean back, and have a nap!
-Oh, and I don't wear a hat when I ride at home....ever. Or when I'm on the yard....ever. I think everyone LOVES that one.

xoxo
