The horses at our yard may be coming in for the night this winter, most of them usually live out 24/7, so that leaves some people a bit pushed for time or even stuck as to who will turnout/muck out their horse, so Im thinking of doing it, but I have no idea what to charge!

So can you please tell me what you would be prepared to pay for the following:

1) Horse turned out in the morning

2)Horse rugged up and turned out in the morning (it will be winter)

3)Horse mucked out but bed left up, hay and water NOT replaced

4)Full muck out including hay and water replaced and bed put down.

The horses will have already had their breakfasts put in by a livery who comes earlier, so that wont come into it.

Thank you!!

1) Horse turned out in the morning - £1

2)Horse rugged up and turned out in the morning (it will be winter) - £2

3)Horse mucked out but bed left up, hay and water NOT replaced - £5

4)Full muck out including hay and water replaced and bed put down. - £7/8

our yard charged

1) T/O £1.50

2) same as T/O

3) not offered but i would think £2.50-3 would be about right - although im presuming the horse would be brought in to this so water top-up/replace would prob be wanted?

4) full muck out, hay and water, £5

Yep but the owners would be bringing the horses in themselves so they may prefer to save however much and do their own hay and water, and let the floor dry, hence leaving the bed up.

Thanks so much for the replies so far!

1) Horse turned out in the morning
I used to pay 50p horse for this. Depends how far stables are from field!

2)Horse rugged up and turned out in the morning (it will be winter)
£1

3)Horse mucked out but bed left up, hay and water NOT replaced
You might be better just skipping out rather than mucking out and leaving the horse stood on concrete. For that I'd charge £2.50

4)Full muck out including hay and water replaced and bed put down.
£5

Thanks, sorry I should have said EVERY horse will be going out, its just a couple of the owners may want to turn their own horse out before work, hence me putting everything seperately.

I pay £1 a day for "jobs". In the summer this is them having the feed I have prepared put in the field and fly spray put on in the morning.

In the winter, they get turned out with rugs changed and brought in and unless soaked, rugs are left on for me to deal with. Any feeds/nets I have made up put in.

This livery is very cheap.

I pay £2.50 for a muck out - Cairo is on matting and Chancer (now) is clean - pees in one place and poos along the back.

Normally I would expect to pay £1 for turnout - with or without one rug being changed. If more were required, ie several rugs taken off/put on then I would expect another 50p. £3 for a muck out with bed left up and £5 for muck out, bed down, water and hay net put in.

I presently pay £5 per day for full livery in winter - turned in/out, rugs changed, feet done, muck out and feeds/nets.

In summer I pay £3 - fed and sprayed twice a day, feet picked out and field poo picked.

This is what my work charges

1) Turnout £1.00

2)Horse rugged up and turned out £1.00

3)Horse mucked out but bed left up, hay and water NOT replaced £3.00

4)Full muck out including hay and water replaced and bed put down. £4.00

Dont you think it would be better to offer part livery because charging one offs like this adds up to a very expensive week if someone wants it every day. Up to £14 pw to have horse rugged and turned out in a morning seems pretty expensive to me on top of the usual costs that liverys will have to pay.

charging seperatley works better for thoese charging though!!

also in my case i like to be able to have some things some days and other job on other days - Pt/Liv would irritate me.

Its all about customer service really and it doesnt need to be either/or. If I usually turned my own horse out every morning but needed to be somewhere one morning £2.00 is not much to pay, however if it needed it doing every morning I think a weekly charge of £14 is too steep on top of the usual livery costs.

Bear in mind that the owners mentioned have enjoyed 24/7 turn out so far so they are probably going to have to buy bedding, hay and if they have also got to find another £14 per week just to have their horse put in a field they may well vote with their feet.

Well it is the liveries who have suggested that I do it, none of them want a part livery arrangement as most work different days every week or shifts, so can be there say 2 mornings out of 5 one week, 3 mornings the next week, so I thought a day by day price would be better for them as then they are only paying for what they need each day.

Of course they dont have to pay anything, they can do their own horse.

adlib haylege is already included in winter livery price, they will just be getting a portion of it inside now.
Bedding will be at a subsidised cost.

Half of the liveries already stable their horses over the winter, so its the remaining ones who dont want the hassle of mucking out who want the service really.

You asked for opinions and I gave mine based on the info you gave in your opening post. You now present additional information to support your view that my suggestion wont work. Would it not have been better to present a full picture in your opening post so that the suggestions you get have relevance to your situation.

I ony asked what people would pay for each of the options I listed, I didnt need to give the full situation to get those answers.

I only expanded what I said based on your comment re part livery.

My query on this post was merely how much people would expect to pay for each option.

Then my answer was a daily charge applied every day is too much so I wouldnt be prepared to pay. Feel like I am going round in circles now.

Please feel free to ignore my opinion - it is your right to do so.

S_B - i think your idea is a good one and certainly when i had my mare on livery the services you are considering offering were invaluable

I also think that the prices quoted above are roughly the same which indicates we all accept a certian prices for these services.

Go for it!!

I pay £200 a month for part livery which includes, feeding, turning in / out, putting on/taking off rugs etc. hay being topped up in the a'noon (as well as use of fab school, maintained grazing and poo picking) - but not mucking out, hay, straw or feed. If we want full livery (mucking out, feet picked out and hay checked as well) it costs us £5 a day extra or £7 a day at w'ends.

Thank you everyone!

I was actually thinking of charging about £2 for a muck out bed up, £3.50 for a full muck out, and £1 for turnout. So your suggested prices are higher than I was expecting!

Im not even that bothered about making much of a profit, but obviously it needs to be worth my while being up there an extra few hours.

Thank you.
