Just been thinking what would be the best type of exercise to do if you have had a horse fall but you know the horse is sound/no heat swelling etc but just expect it to be stiff? Would you lunge lightly in something like a pessoa in a large circle making sure you warm up properly to help stretch muscles etc, or would you hack in a straight line for a few days?

Never been in the situation before but I think I would go hacking for a few days as I feel lunging can be quite hard on a sore/stiff horse. As hacking will give him some chill time to relax.

Yep that was my thoughts, but was just thinking from the "no weight on back" stretching point of view...if horse landed on saddle may be slightly bruised for a few days...?

Would be very interested in the answers here (see comp riders!). Did you have a horse fall?
I am waiting until my own aches and pains are less sore on the theory that he'll be feeling similar. Also got to check all my tack etc. for damage.

Yep but I think prob not as spectacular as yours! I know how you feel though, am rather sore myself, but the horse was feeling very spritely this mrning, so will prob be fine, but I want to make ure am doing the best for him....!!

I agree with Mrs T
Walking, hacking fine in straight lines for a few days. If there is any bruising it will take a few days to heal. Then call out chiro/physio.

When winston fell at aston last year i had a week to get him fit for the following event. He had a few days off, went on the walker then saw the physio. He then had a further few days off on the walker (ONLY) then i rode him.

Because of the time of year etc he was relatively fit from runs so the walker enabled me to keep him ticking over without the pressure of a rider etc.

Thansk hon, thats where a walker is usefull.....hm, will have a prod and see how sensitive his back is tonight, and if all is well will take him out walking....he trotted up sound this morning which is alway nice to see!

When my horse and I slipped over the first thing I did was got the chiropractor out to make sure his back/pelvis/atlas was okay.

OH no!
I didnt realise G had fallen

HOW? did i miss something?

Yeah just take him for a nice walk. That wont hurt him. Winston has twisted his pelvis AGAIN ARGH but the walking is helping etc, just until physio arrives.

We gave Chocx a few days off then hacked him, he felt absolutely normal so we carried on as normal.
Last week we were having the McTominey lady over to another horse so paid for him to get the once over. Apparently fit as a flea and no problems at all.
Not so poor CCj, who is already suffering from a fall off another horse...(landed on her bum!)

If he fell on the saddle, it might be an idea to get the saddle checked? My old mare & I had a hard fall at a ditch (it was overgrown & we didn't see it) & she cartwheeled onto me/saddle & it broke the tree?

Ive had the odd horse fall (usually on the flat) - I give them 2 days off to chill out in the field. Then Ill lunge gently for about another 2 days, then get on and do gentle schooling to see how they are feeling and take it from there.

We had a fall on the flat almost 3 weeks ago where Joe lost his footing cantering a circle and went down. He came crashing down on his side trapping my foot underneath his shoulder. He got up sound while I was hopping lame

He had a couple of days off then we had a very gentle hack before another couple of days off. He has been sound through out and is ok now back in harder work.

I would just take it easy for a few days and see how you go. It sounds like a nasty fall

Thanks, I loose schooled him last night (school is 50x50 ) to loosen him off after being stood in all day, and although stiff to start he seemed ok. Giving him today off then will hack for a few days. Thanks everyone, fingers crossed all will be fine!
