went to bring in horse from field and she has leant against a rail and small piece of wood has gone into her chest/shoulder. No blood and not particularly open but the wood (inch long) was hanging out of her chest which I think about 5/10cm was in her chest, first instinct was to pull it out, however I think there is a bit left in as it kind of snapped.....

What do i do? speayed it wiht antiseptic, there wasnt any blood and the skin is not that broken, but I can see the wood under her skin..... do i just leave it and let natuer take its course ?
will it come out on its own
Iam worriedit may become infected and become a gaping hole?

would really recommend your ideas.......thanks

If you really think that some wood is still in the wound, then you should call out the Vet so that they can thoroughly clean it, get the wood out and give some antibiotics.

if it was in a different place id say poultice but due to where it is im afraid its a vet job-unless you can get hold of the splinter with tweezers or something, but even then i wouldnt recommend it really sorry

thanks will call teh vet tomorrow, it looks nothing now but I think it could become nasty if left..

Do take it seriously and get the vet to it. My friend's horse had a piece of a branch go into her shoulder and though it looked like nothing the piece of wood worked its way further in and she got a serious infection which caused muscle damage and atrophy and eventually she had to be pts.
