What to do if you are attacked by an XL bully

According to the daily Fail

It's almost laughable!! It might work for a rouge cockapoo or JRT but a bully - you would stand no chance. As for throwing food to distract it, well I have a 20kg spaniel that is NOT ONE BIT intersted in food when he's hunting so I can't see an XL in a frenzied state intent on mauling it's prey (you) giving up for a measly loaf of bread! I'm beginning to think that we'll be needing to carry a baseball bat with nails in it in certain areas soon as let's face it there's more likelyhood of being attacked by an XL than of being caught by the police with that weapon!!

The illustrations really make it, especially the dude carrying the spare coat when he is already wearing one and is handily also carrying some pork chops or whatever.

There are some OK points in the article but I have never heard of the fella, I would not offer up the side of my leg, there are some quite important arteries in that area and agree a dog in a heightened state of arousal probably won't take food. I can get my dog to out for food, but she is weird :p

I always carry pork chops on my walks! (not!)

None of mine have been very interested in food on walks, sniffs are far more their thing. I very much doubt anything would distract that type of dog in full attack mode. Slightly crazy advice.

I don't think a coat or piece of food is going to distract an attacking XLB, and I would quite like to keep my leg.

Didn't one of the victims bleed to death from a leg wound?

I have thought about this too much.

The only thing I can come up with, is to stab it in the eyes.

It isnt that simple though. My understanding of a legal carry is that it needs to be foldable and does not lock. It would be very difficult to get the knife folded out, while being mauled.

Not sure even that would stop it, this is really horrible, but they used to blind bears before baiting them, and they still fought for their lives - against the very type of dogs we're talking about.

Throttling a dog assumes that you have a lead or similar with you and/or the attacking dog is wearing a collar. Also that you have a strong enough grip to keep a throttle hold on a heavy whirling dervish.
I think to throttle a dog that was hanging off your body somewhere would be well nigh impossible and I’m pretty sure most people (me included) would not be calm enough to do anything constructive. I think the best you can do is try not to pull away and hope there’s someone else nearby.

FWIW, the best advice is usually to throttle (lead tourniquet) a dog which is biting and refusing to let go - a dog which can't breath WILL let go. I suspect though, that this is quite difficult with a dog whose neck is as thick as your waist.
I very much doubt these dogs will let go.
Given one was stabbed, tasered twice and shot 3 times and still didnt let go!

They would let go if you could apply sufficient enforced pressure that you cut off the oxygen to its brain. But I think it will have ripped your leg off before any of us could achieve that.

We all know that everyone who owns an XL Bully will abide by the law, so there is no need to worry.

Look how well the ban worked with Pit Bulls👿😡

Don't remember the last time I ever saw a Pit Bull sooo...presumably it went fairly well?

Eta - that should read 'I don't remember ever having seen a Pit Bull'. Not 'the last time'. There was no last time. Or first time.

Thats because they bred them to be XL bullies. There certainly were pockets where they were relatively common in the North East where I am from, within the last 10yrs anyway.

I'm sure there's one on my street. It's definitely pitbullesque but I'm not an expert. I've only ever seen it a couple of times because I live at the end of the street but I've been dying to get a picture of it to ask people here what they think. I should note It's never given me concern but the 'hysteria' is real with me, I never walk the dog past its house. I also think it's the only one I've ever seen.

The rest of my street has schnauzers and cockapoos so it really took me by surprise.

I'm fairly certain pit bulls were used in the breeding of XLB's.
I'm aware of that. I just think the illegality of PB goes some way to explaining why they're not massively common like the XLBs are. I suppose my hope is that now XLBs are illegal too their numbers will, eventually, dwindle.

Can we test out the advice in this article with some members of parliment?
I have met some really lovely XL Bullies, but on the whole, no average joe needs a dog with that drive combined with that power - that being said a Mali has more drive, and a cane corso has more power.. so what will the idiots choose to have next? They'll never stop, they'll just get the next 'in' dog.. a Kangal maybe?

Just looked at a YouTube video, wondering what will be the next vicious dog to have, (no I'm not thinking of getting one) a You Tube video " ViralBe Only These Dogs Breeds Can Face a Cane Corso " I've only heard of 3 of the 10 named, it's quite frightening to think what they will come up with next as a cross breed. ( sorry I'm an old git who doesn't know how to put the link up)

I believe it's section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act.

There's case law to establish that "folding knife" means one whose blade does not lock in the open position. And I believe that the letter of the law states a "cutting edge" not exceeding 76mm (3 inches).

But there are plenty of folding pocket knives that would meet both requirements (i.e. the blade does not lock and the cutting edge is shorter than 76mm) and that can be opened with one hand.

The Spyderco UKPK was specifically designed to meet both those legal requirements while being easily opened with just one hand.

When a cane corsa was following me, going across the road and ignoring its owner, I reversed slowly away from it not turning my back and knocked on a neighbours door. I climbed on the wall by her door to distance myself, while this was going on the owner was screaming for the dog to come and screaming at me to f**king stand still it wasn't going to hurt me. I was seriously petrified, I don't think any of this advice would have helped. I did have the sense not to run. It's making me stressed just thinking about it now and the dog never touched me.

Sorry all I've corrected my post from was to wasn't, makes a lot of difference, however I was still petrified. She had no control over the dog, no lead and when I crossed the road to avoid it, the dog followed me.

I guess my hope is that the owners who want a status dog that looks hard will move onto the latest terrifying Cross but those that bought xl bullies as family pets because they are such "loyal, loving furbabies" won't so that will hugely reduce the number of dangerous dogs out there and therefore reduce the attacks.
