What to do? Loose dogs out hacking

Get a Dazzer II from Amazon, it is high pitched sound you cant hear it, or the horse or the dogs owner, but the dog certainly can and it will slink away with its tail between its legs, the owner will wonder what had happened, love it.

I've been there too peter, mine had such deep chunks out of her that I could fit my hand in, & instead of just blood her legs had her own fat on them where it had come out of the gaping hole in her stomach. Like I said, vet did think initially she wouldn't make it. It was a pitbull, & as you can imagine when one brings a horse down, they have a hugely powerful jaw. Dog was deranged enough it was pts, also bit more than one person. But because it was so bad, if she didn't get over it, she'd have been pts anyway. Because she was so scared she would have hurt herself just at the sound of a dog in the field. So I maintain if she could come through that to be 100% with dogs, there is absolutely no need why any horse should have issues that prevent it being safe with a competent rider. Especially in the case of dogs that aren't actually dangerous.
