I am after a little advice, I have a rising 6yr old who I have had coming on 2yrs. I have not done much just taking things slowly as we have had a couple of set backs so mainly stuck to hacking. We had a spell of napping when hacking alone which we managed to over come. Well the napping has started again, he doesn't listen to me when I ride him hacking alone or in the school, but is fine when we hack out with others.
Today I decided to go for a quick hack as didn't have much time & he was a nightmare we even nearly backed on the electric fencing so had to brace myself incase he got a shock
. I won all the battles, but I just wanted to cry as we seem to take 2 steps forward & 10 steps back, if I am honest we have never really *clicked*. He is on edge & not relaxed when we are alone, but go out with others he is happy likes to be up front.
I am begining to think he doesn't like me, to handle his manners are fab he is a real gentle soul, he is super in traffic, standing at junctions he is brill I really can't fault him apart from this issue. I can't afford to have lessons for a few weeks due to having other stuff to pay for first, he has had back/saddle, teeth checked etc. He is a horse that just doesn't like going out alone & I hack him at least twice a week.
Also he is one that can be left for weeks get on & he is fine he is a real laid back type, it's just this hacking alone & when we are in the school. People tell me to keep doing what I am doing as everytime I win the battle so we are heading in the right directon, but I just don't feel that *click* & am not enjoying riding him at the moment (which he probs can sense).
So my question is would...
Sell
Work everyday to keep his mind active
Just hack alone until he gets over his issue
Turn him away for a bit let him have some chill time
Or just do what I do now which is abit of everything schooling, lunging & hacking
