Sorry to post in here but more view here than Vet - just need advice if anyone has experienced something similar.

Have a loan horse who came in for the day from the field two weeks ago and was fine but by evening had a swollen leg from pastern to mid cannon bone. Called the vet who said as lame on trot up give AB’s, bute and applied pressure bandage and said see how it goes, came again on Tues improved but still not right on trot up as was sound to the eye but if listened not quite, swelling was more localised to the pastern, more bute and course of ABs and pressure bandage again. Came back on the Thurs said not sound on trot up as showing a lame stride every 3/4 strides, swelling gone down but still there and horse reacts quite strongly if both sides of pastern squeezed together. Vet spoke to owner as she thought horse should be scanned/x rayed at this point and horse is insured. Owner came over and felt not at Scan/X ray stage yet (I am a worrier particularly as not mine), suggested 5 days of bute and continue box rest. Saturday owner asked us to walk horse out as thinks box rest may be causing swelling and he is so well in himself and not showing pain in the leg, leg went down but by Sunday morning was more swollen than had been. This morning still a slight swelling and it is two weeks on but this could be because the bute last given on Thurs am should be out of his system (by swelling means still looks slightly fatter than the other leg).

Just wondered if anyone else has any experience of this, could it be a strain – is there anything else I can try as treatment. Someone suggested arnica but not sure if this would help in this situation? Vet thought cold hosing further antibiotics would not be beneficial

Any suggestions/experiences would be useful - just feel like I want to be doing something.

Thanks appreciate long, so afternoon choccy bar for getting this far!

She's not ignoring as such, I think she just thinks if it was serious issue he would be in pain which he does not appear to be and lame which he isn't - would they not be lame or show pain with a ligament? Really hard as have had horses for years but just not come across this type of injury before. Insurance is in owners name so can not proceed until she feels it is necessary, athough I am very worried as I said 100% magnified by the fact that he is not my my horse. Our own horse is lame and on long term rest with a poor prognosis, but I can deal with it because I know what is wrong and what I need to do. I admin not knowing what is wrong with the loan horse is making me twitchy.

The horse is lame so therefore there is pain of some description!

If she's not willing to help the horse now by authorising treatment then being brutal I'd be asking her to take it back - ultimately you're paying for something you can't do anything with because she won't give the go ahead for treatment.

Sorry if that seems harsh but I had the same carry on last year with a lame loan horse and it's not fun.

I didn't think I could do that as I have standard BHS contract that said I am responsible for vets fees etc.

I'll take a look at him again this evening and trot up again etc and will call her again, I have been sending daily photo updates but thought perhaps I was worrying too soon as if he was mine I would have gone with scan/x ray but another livery owner said she would not have called the vet yet, I just thought two weeks was too long to still be swollen without knowing why, but like I said I am a paranoid owner!

It's one thing being responsible for vet fees but another when she's holding up treatment cos it needs to go through insurance. Again from experience, the BHS contract isn't enforceable......

If I had a horse that had been lame for two weeks with no obvious reason then I'd be having it investigated.
