My horse has been on loan since October - lovely lady, I inspected the yard where she had other horses, all in good condition and happy. At first she was in touch a lot and all was going well. I emailed her before Christmas for an update and got no reply. Left it until last week, as she was always a bit slow to respond, and sent a couple of texts - still no reply. Tried to phone, and her phone has been off all day today. I sent another email today.

I don't know whether to worry, turn up there, or just keep trying. I'm not the type of person who would normally turn up unannounced and would much rather arrange it, as I trusted her with him, but I can't even make the arrangements to do this if she doesn't reply to me.

Would you just go there, or keep trying for a few more days?

Thanks

I would turn up as you have tried to contact her, if all is well I'm sure that if you explain you were worried, especially with all these horror stories, she will understand perfectly. Personally I think it just shows that you care about the horse and I'm sure she will see this.
If however all is not well you will be glad you didn't leave it any longer

i would just turn up now and if you see her and she asks what you are doing there just explain you've tried to contact her and got no reply so though you'd go to the yard just to make sure all was ok with her and the horse.

Yes I agree you hVe tried for long enough.

May be email and text giving a date and time you will be visiting your horse, it may make her reply.
Even if she doesn't reply turn up at specified date and time explain you had no response and wanted to check alk was well.
You hear so many horror stories, it better to check and be satisfied than leave it longer and regret it if there us something wrong.

Thanks all - that is fairly unanimous! I will go over there in the next couple of days, I do hope all is ok.

Thanks all for the replies. I will go as soon as I can get out of work (the appeal of calling in sick today is massive!) and let you know. I'm not quite worried yet, but if this carries on... anyone want to loan a really nice horse?!

With all the horror stories you read about I would be in the car now going to the yard to check. (but don't panic yourself!) Am sure everything is fine and there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for not getting in touch with you.

I currently have a pony on loan to me and have told the owners they can come and see him regularly. Have also told them happy for them to turn up unannounced too (which they did a couple of months ago). I have nothing to hide. Would be a bit miffed if an owner kept turning up on a very regular basis though and 'interferred'

With other loan ponies in the past I have also told the owners they can come anytime to check on their horse.

I don't see the problem with allowing an owner access to their animal so don't feel bad about turning up unannounced. Some times you should do this just so the loanee doesn't have time to potentially prepare for your visit. Spot checks ;)

Alarm bells are ringing, in every case we deal with people have stopped all contact then if they are caught up with they lost the phone, husband died, broke their legs etc, if you would like to contact us with the details we will tell you if its someone on our radar? missinghorsesonloan@gmail.com i do seriously hope you don't need our services but we are here to help www.missinghorsesonloan.co.uk

We are currently receiving about one horse a day missing on loan :-(

I'd be up there like a shot, having called work and explained I would be a bit late due to a family emergency. I, too, am a worrier so I wouldn't be able to leave it a few days. Please let us know what happens. Good luck and I hope everything is ok.

Missing on loan is a huge problem round here, I have to be honest like it or not, I'd have been there the next day - if she had a prior record of being quick to reply...

If I were you i'd turn up with no warning. Just so she couldn't 'hide' anything or 'move' anything if it's gone bad. Not saying it has! :-)

Good luck. :3

Fingers crossed that all is well when you get there.

If it is, to avoid another panic, I'd give my contact details to YO and ask to be notified if anything changes, or there are any problems.

I've had my horse on loan since November 2011 and to be honest I said to her owner that I would prefer that she turned up unannounced.
I'd be very worried if I was in your position and I'd be calling in sick to work and going to check on my horse :(
