i got Pip out of the field yesterday morning and noticed she was a bit lame and a puffy front leg- we'd hunted on sunday and although she trotted up fine when we got home i figured it was something to do with this - she ate her hard feed fine but was very quiet and off her hay - luckily my wonderful farrier was due out any way so asked him to have a look and it looks like shes tweaked her suspensory over the wingalls, he compared it to us spraining our ankle badly. we agreed to rest her and danillon for 5/7 days and re asses with the vet if necessary so she started on half a sachet 3 times a day, as of yesterday lunchtime. today i was unable to get to the yard so my mum went down and said leg was still puffy but that she'd been charging around over night and much more her self and trying to cause a nussance, but didnt trot her up - my problem is though she has UFP/locking stifles and cant be stabled overnight but comes in from 8am-5pm so shes out in the smallest flattest dryest paddock we have over night, she doesnt normally charge around and is normally outovernight on her own, yo said she wasnt stressed just kicking up her heels as it were as shes obviously feeling better thanks to the danillon, but i obviously dont want her doing this and making her injury worse - so what would you fountains of knowledge suggest? i feel a bit catch 22 that if i dropped the danillon she might be a bit more subdued and less likely to run around but she'd be uncomfortable and possibly in pain, but with the danillon and no work shes likely to try and burn off energy in the field? help please - i've never had a lame horse before and the ones i've known would have been box rested for something like this :S

chocolate bourbons for getting this far!

we have one not far from us which i may give a go - althoguh not sure how accepting she'll be of it as she trys to avoid any type of water/mud at all costs! this would be something i'd consider if we dont see any improvment/change after this week - farrier also suggested not to cold hose as she has just got over horrendous bout of mudfever on this same leg so some parts of the skin are still bare and pink - we talked about ice tight and similar but feared this would cause more damage/irritation to the already soft skin which is just recovering from the mudfever

Personally after just having a horse with susp ligament tear I would ring vet.I would also restrict size of her turnout if not the small tear will get worse. A month of restricted turnout could save your mare from much bigger tear.

thanks guys - will ring vet tomorrow, hopefully they wont want want to come and charge me something silly for me to tell them something that i've already been told by a professional but think it will put my mind at rest - her turnout is currently only about 20mx20m i think off the top of my head, will try and make it smaller - am moving yards on sunday and new place has an un used round pen that she could prbably go in over night - would this work do you think?

My restricted turnout was same size as stable but I linked tape up into a maze so he had grazing and placed hay in different sections. You need to keep her as quiet as possible and have scans small tear will heal much better with good treatment .If worse comes to worse ask for prp details .Good luck:D

Dont want to frighten you but you really need to get the vet out asap & get that leg scanned without it you really dont know what you are dealing with.I would ask the vet to come out with the scanner.... obviusly if vet doesnt think it needs scanning then they wont but it could save you another visit fee.I had a mare who i also thought was a minor sprain.....oh how i was wrong!!!! Please get the vet .... i know your farrier has had a look but it's not really his department! Good luck.xx
