Hi guys, really dont know what to do. I was given a gypsy foal as a 30th present, he's now 2, lovely little boy, had high hopes for him, but was always going to sell at some point. I love him to bits, but if I keep him, I'll have to rent land for the summer, If I sell him, I'll have enough grass for my other horse. Am broke, but who isnt. Part of me wants to sell him, another part of me wants to. I'm afraid that after looking after him for nearly 2 years, I wont know that he's being looked after, especially with the crrent climate. I'd give him away if I thought he'd have a forever home. Aghhhh, what to do, If I only eat every second day, I'll afford the grazing! wonder if there's a third possibility that I'm not thinking about!!! Any advice greatly apreciated!!!!!

Don't envy you, horrible situation. But you've got to be realistic. If you really are that broke, and you will struggle to pay for his grazing, what will you do if he has a big vet's bill? If you make it really difficult for yourself, then you won't be enjoying owning him anyway. If he is as nice as you say he is, and you can spend the time finding him the right home, then perhaps that's the right way to proceed. I sold my previous horse 18 months ago and I waited 6 months to find him the most suitable home.
Do the best you can xx

2 year old will be harder to sell than a 3 year old (even better if he has been started on, or as a 4yr old going nicely). Also if you are going to sell him wait until june/july. Everyone is happier in summer and willing to part with money for a horse because the hell of keeping them over winter will be a distant memory (especially after this winter!)

Thanks guys, I know that nobody wants a 2 year old. If I could just find someone that had grazing rented for the summer that would take another horse, and I paid for his bit of it, then we'd be at 3 in no time!! At least then I could sell him as broken and riding, I'll get on donedeal and see if anyone's willing to share grazing.
As for big vets bills, just couldnt do it, but thankfully my vet takes a few quid a week kinda thing!!!
My poor sister bought a caviler royale gelding 2 years ago and has spent twice what she paid for him in vets since, and he's still lame at the moment!!! God love her!!!

Sorry, I'm just noticing that you're in Ireland... is the horse situation improving over there? I know we always get the bad news, or it wouldn't be 'news', but last I heard they were considering a one-time free cull of unwanted horses- things were pretty bad over there.

I like the idea of a companion home, if you were here, I'd gladly let him graze with my guys for a year.

Thanks so much, I'll try to find a companion home. Horse situation isnt as bad as has been reported, but it's not great. In the boom, it was fashionable to have a horse, unfortunately, lots of people now cant afford them, and there is no market to sell them on!! It's one reason I dont want to sell my boy, god knows what would happen to him. I'll be fine for grazing after this year, it's just I have to totally re-seed my land, so no grazing of my own for this year. I think I might try to put in some kind of all weather section for next winter to keep them off the fields for next winter, but dont know how much that will cost. So need to either win the lotto or meet a millionaire!!!!

I'm in England so it might be different over there, but I was very upfront and brazenly approached some tree surgeons and asked what they did with their wood chippings. After a bit of banter and falling around laughing after I found out they were called Worm, Squirrel and Pan, they were thrilled to agree to drop off 1, prob 2 ton of wood chippings for 20quid!

So get out there and start 'bothering' people. Tree surgeons etc are usually men and respond incredibly well to girls in jods batting their eyelashes asking for their waste products :D I am wanting to build a big corral and a school sized area, and they have confirmed they can supply all I need and then some. And if all it takes is £20 a load and a bit of banter its a win, win situation :D
