Hi,

My mare had bi-lateral hock arthrodesis 2 years ago in order to fuse her hock bones to counterract bog-spavin. She is now 100% sound, and is back to the same level of work as she was pre-lameness (which was only 2/10 in the first place). Now, I am thinking of selling her, as I am going to move to America next year.

She is a 14.2hh M/W Tovero mare, who has done lots of p/c and r/c, as well as Local shows, and jumps up to 3'6 ish.

I was just wondering what people would think if they heard that a horse they were interested had undergone this...if it really is going to limit who takes her (I don't want to sell her for nothing as I can't say I would trust who would have her, not that paying more means that they will be nice to her!) I am going to probably take her to the states with me.

Any ideas anyone!? SHe is a nice girly just don't know what to do!

Hi,

How old is she, and what would class as selling 'for nothing?' I think she sounds lovely for a pc pony, and might fetch up to 4K, but I would have to talk to a vet first to get the low down on her operation and prognosis.

Do you know how much shipping to the US is? I would imagine it's rather expensive, but that's probably not the point if you love her lots.

one alternative is to sign her over to a trusted charity such as SWHP and then they will loan her out to people they have checked, and continue to keep tabs on her. would give you peace of mind, perhaps? just an idea.
i would never give a horse away or loan one out again... in my bitter experience, if people pay nothing for something, they treat it as if it worth nothing. (i'm sure there are lovely loaners out there, but unfortunately my horses didn't find them...)

Mine had fused long and short pastern bones - that was the reason I didn't bring him with me.

I was advised to sell him for around £4,500 by a very well known 3-Day Eventer who rode him...however I advertised him for £1,700 and got the full asking price from a wonderful and kind lady who still has him and will have him till the end I'm sure.

She is 9. Yes, I am going to get the vet out in February to have another look, but the surgeon who last saw her said she was fully sound, and still is....long term prognosis is good, shouldn't see any stiffness as the joint is fused anyway!

Nothing, I will give her away I think to a good home if I don't think it is worth selling her. She is with a nice girl at the moment on loan, but really if I could get some money I would like to! (of course!) Yes, I understand...giving away could lead to not so great a home, but I also feel the same with a 'token' price. I am not sure at all!!

I have heard that shipping can be from £2000 to £6600, and am waiting for some quotes.

What would people think with a good long term prognosis even with the history? How detrimental do you all think it would be to selling?

Thank you for the reponses, keep them coming!

she sounds really great...where abouts are you...?
I had problems with my long term loan....my pony was only out for 1 yr and they wanted to give her back...no probs they just bought a horse for themselves...
Loan are not always guranteed and it can be a problem....
I wish I had more land...I would love to have her...I have owned my old pony for 15 yrs now and she is with me for life...slight sucker for keeping pets....
Are there any friends who could take her on...?
I could ask around for you, if you are local to me...Im based in berkshire...

Herringbone,

She is in W.Sussex, so a bit of a way! Yeah, I would prefer to keep her, she is absolutely fine to still do everything, just the chance that it all may go a little wrong in the future. I will try and post some pictures of her when I figure this forum out a bit more!
