what to do with a tail like this!!!!!

Cor!

My Welshie looks very similar to your one in your Avatar. And with a similar tail !!!!

I cut the bottom of hers as it was dragging in the mud a year ago. It's grown bushier but not that much longer.

I drown hers in Canter Mane and Tail spray every so often and use one those round-headed horsey/human hairbrushes from Roma. That goes through it a treat and doesn't seem to pull out yards of it like a plastic curry does.

What do you do with a tail like that? Love it, that's what! Alternatively you can pull the hair out and send it to me, I'll glue it on to T's behind

I don't know.
I have a similar tail attached to my Shire x Tb, except as I have never washed it, it has spiral mudlocks too.
The yard has just installed hot water by meter, so I am trying to pluck up the courage to deal with it.

My ID/TB has very thick black tail as well
I dont like pulled tails so used to plait for shows/XC etc but do try to keep it a bit shorter than that however he grows mane and tail very quickly, but has fine skin.

I love it! I wouldnt pull it but then I hate pulled tails. try using thinning scissors on the back hairs. Take little chunks at a time and cut them with the thinners. We do it on our dog in the summer and it works great, but just make sure the chunks of hair a small enough otherwise you just cut it off. Other than that lots of mane and tail conditioner and and trim the bottom up a bit!I do love it though, its nice to see a lovely thick tail unpulled!!!

Honestly it is easy to keep this type of tail looking really good with little effort.

This is Chancer's tail - it rests on the ground - just got blown in this pic so you can't see the length but as you can see is very thick.

and this is Jemima, the mare I loaned before I bought my little Stinky.

What I do is to wash out the tail - you have to do this is four sections. Then I detangle using Equss Survivor (get from Tailgator.co.uk) - it is the best detangler you can buy I believe - and I have tried them all. Once combed out, I put the bottom half into a plait and then plait the top half. You can use the cheap hair bands from Tesco - value terry ones that really stretch but don't damage the tail.

Next, pop into a extra wide tailbag from Tailgator they do ones designed for traditional cob tails. Fold up the bag and forget for two weeks. Two weeks time, take out the bag, gently comb through with a bit of Survivor and plait and rebag.

I also rub megatek into the top as Chancer sometimes rubs.

In summer, I still bag, but I leave the top third of the tail out to swish with.

Other alternative if you dont want such a thick tail. Get one of the excellent rakes from clipper sharp and lift up the top third and plait to keep out of the way. Then carefully run the rake down the tail until it is thinned as you want. Do a little bit at a time and keep checking to see how it looks.

Release the top layer and the tail should look perfectly natural, just less of it.

Do you have a mane to match? If you do, just do the same as the tail but use mane bags.

My mares tail was like this till I got the clipper lady to shave it up the sides (so it looks like its been pulled) and trim it so its nice and short.

It looks loads better and I think my horsey will like it. She used to rub and rub in summer as I think it was so thick it got hot and itchy for her?

Edited to add I clip her feathers and pull her mane short, I'm not keen on her looking cobby so having the tail done just fits in with the overall look.
