becky our 24yr old arab that we have on loan is very fine and is slightly arthritic. me and mum have been thinkng about winter and we are very concerened bout her. we only rent fields we have no stabling if it snows or if it gets really cold. this isn't an issue for pop the highland obviously. what do you think i should do?? she gets very stiff even if it rains and is cool overnight. should i keep her till it gets cold and wintery then send her back to her owner over winter where she has great stabling?? or just see how she goes with a big cuddly rug?? see our problem is we are only used to our natives

help please
thanks

I would see how she goes, but speak to her owner to advise her that you are worried how she will cope if it's a bad winter and she may need to go back to her.

Is there any chance of renting a field with a barn in it? or putting up a field shelter? Then you could section 1/2 off, and use as a stable for her and the other half for your Highland to come and go as he pleases.

If not, I don't think it'd be fair on her to keep her out in the winter, no matter how many rugs. If i was her owner I'd think much more of you for thinking of her welfare first and sending her back BEFORE she drops weight, than i would if you attempted to keep her out .

To keep a horse like this over the winter requires careful feeding and rugging.

yeh i would feel so bad cause she a great wee horse and deserves the best, we love her loads but its her welfare we have to consider. we have a large field shelter in the field but its that tall and weather can get in if coming from the right direction
