My beautiful new mare is jet black. Sadly, at some point in her life someone has put on a tail bandage too tight and it has caused a lot of white hair to grow in at the sides of her dock. This looks very unsightly. Would you:

Depends on what the passport says, if the white hair is mentioned I would leave it and let it grow, if it isn't mentioned I would try colouring it - once you start though you will be doing it forever

I would say let it grow but I suppose would have to see pictures to see the full extent. It also depends on what you plan to do with her, if it's purely for 'fashion' reasons and because you don't like the way it looks it would be a bit cruel IMO.

Any photos of it ?

Unless you are planning to show her , I wouldnt worry too much about it

Probably would just let it grow .

No, it is not on her passport as it did not occur until she was backed and under saddle. In her foal pics and youngstock pics I have from her breeder there is no white hair. I can't believe that in this day and age someone in a top professional yard would be neglgent enough do this to her poor tail.

I don't have any pics of just her tail. As she is very black it does look very unsightly indeed. Currently her tail is pulled/trimmed and I have trimmed the hair quite short so that it does not grow long, though there is really too much of the white hair to shave/trim it all off, so it still looks pretty horrible. She is a dressage horse so is out and about to shows quite a lot.

What sort of dye would be best if I did go down that route? I probably won't but if she qualifies for the nationals or something I may just be tempted! At the end of the day I would never do anything to make her uncomfortable, but I would have thought dyeing hair darker (so no bleach) would be easy enough as I could maybe get one of these conditioning rinses - 'no more grey' or something that would actually condition her hair and the skin on her dock.

Had a look at my pics of her - none that really show it as I have kept it trimmed pretty short and my camera isn't the poshest so it doesn't show it up too well. Its basiclly at both sides of her dock (though not over the top) starting about 2 inches down and running for about 6 inches. If it was allowed to grow long as a full tail it would look like the tail of a piebald horse as there would be quite a lot of white hair from either side. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks Colleen!!!!!

The cover magic is exactly what I need for her tail! As long as I keep it pulled quite short then I can easily put it on her white hair to cover it temporarily for shows. She has her first competition with us on Sunday (an elementary class) so too late for that but it will be fab for future shows!

Its funny as when we got the DVD of her we kept thinking it was a trick of the light then when we saw her in the flesh we realised her tail actually did have lots of white in it.

She is such a sweetie it still upsets me as to how much it must have hurt to do that to her tail

Thanks! As long as she behaves and listens we will be happy with her

Aww - thanks! I will not be riding but will be taking lots of pics!!!! She is a very lucky girl as she has not one but two new mummies as I co-own her with a friend. I have also just bought her auntie (out of Merinkas grandmother) who is 3 and currently away being backed. Once I have pics of both will have to get a siggie done
