What to do with his mane?

Ok have a best turned out type show coming up, and have no idea what to do with pickles mane, would quite like to keep the length as he looks a bit silly with it short? Is it possible to do any plaits with? sor should I just leave it loose? (and risk loosing marks due to the way best turned out is marked at our yard!)

An Arab plait! Sorry if that the incorrect term but thats what I have always known it as, I had a welshie once and I used to do it really tight and up at the crest and from a distance you couldn't tell it wasn't ordinary plaits obviously close up it looks very girlie
 
If your horse is registered Welsh it would be incorrect to mess with the mane and tail at all, and you shouldn't be expected to plait as they should be shown natural. If part bred, plaits are correct

t_w Umm I don't think her horse is a Welsh and I plaited mine up to go show jumping to keep his wild brush out of my hands.

jrdw where are you based cause if your local I don't mind plaiting, as long as you don't mind the fact that i'm slow at doing it, I like to call it meticulous but other say slow!

his whole body is gleaming and his mane and tail are shiny too.
He is obviously 100% now as judging by his coat he looks fantastic x
I haven't a clue what an arab plait is could someone by kind enough to explain as I may like to try it on my lad as I have problems with getting his mane to lie one way or the other

What i'm thinking of is like a french plait but your only pulling in hair from one side, you do itdown the neck pulling in the mane on the one side and just normal plait the other, that probably makes no sense but its the best I can do as a description.

We actually still have a week of walk only, just a good brush and he seems to look very shiny no products involved!
 
running plait - think is the true name as it were

If you don't want to touch the length, I'd do a running plait
 
you'll proablaly disagree with me
pull the mane max 4inchs, clips feather off, cut tail (start of white bits on back legs ) and pull tail
He looks cracking now..................

BUT i bet you he'll look fiffty thousand time better sorry that's what i would do if i was going to show him
 
Sorry but I have to agee with kick_on, I'd love to see him with a tidy, short, pulled mane, trimmed beard, no feathers and a pulled, banged tail. I'd bet he'd look amazing (even more so than he does now!!!). I have a 4 year old I'm schooling for someone at the moment and he came to me really scruffy- long mane, hairy legs, scraggy beard, anyway I gave him a complete makeover and then took him to little show and his owner walked right past him, she didn't recognise him!!! Other people who knew him couldnt believe it was the same horse!! But everyone to their own, good luck with your show, he looks in great condition!!
 
I do agree about his tail it needs a good trim, it looks rough at the moment!

Not sure I could bear to cut his mane off, as this is an absulutely tiny show, and I really like his mane.

Pulled tail would look good (if I could do it!)

Glad to hear he is nearly there though Jess ( sos have not been up to date with reading posts just lately as been busy) What I meant was that he looks well in his coat and that whatever was bothering him internally looks to have passed as horses tend to show their wellbeing by the quality of their coat and he just looks fantastic.
I like his feathers to be honest, my lad has big one's at the mo. I am tempted to take off myself but I'm not sure and I don't know if owner would like it even though he is with me now permanently.
I don't have a clue about pulling tails as his was done when I got him. I managed to trim and pull his mane myself though but have no idea if I had done it correctly as I'm not on a competive yard and many don't even ride at all.
Good luck with the show though

If he was mine...

I'd pull the mane so it was the same length as his forelock.
I'd cut the tail so that looking at him from behind when he was walking along, the bottom was level with just below where the hock finishes near the chestnuts.
I'd take off all his feathers
I'd trim the hair level around his coronet bands
I'd cut off those little long hairs under his jaw and throat.
 
i agree with you kick on i think horses look so much better with a shorter mane, (unless welsh andalusian etc) and i'd have to cut those feathers off. they grow back so quickly wouldnt hurt to try!
