Hi,

I have a young Welsh Section D and his mane is really starting to look a little punk rock! Are you supposed to pull a Welsh Section D mane?

If anyone could enlighten me on the correct way to deal with a Moorlands mane that would be fabulous! We don't do any serious showing.

Thanks

you can get away with pulling a D's mane! Just don't do it showjumper stylee....If his mane is starting to look punky plait it over for a few days to make it lie - you can just make it out in the pic below

and I show and dressage my D with his mane like this

If I didn't do any discreet pulling he would look terrible - his mane grows rapidly and looks a right mess!! I also use a little brylcreme to keep it flat at shows as it's a bit frizzy to say the least!!

D's should have their mane pulled

Moses pics are perfect, you want to aim to pull it to a length that will enhance the neck. So something with a more cresty neck will be able to carry off a longer mane.

When I became owner of my Sec D - he had his main pulled (just to slighty longer than pics above). However, he's now wintered out and I've sort of left his main, which has become rather long.

I'm new to main pulling and whilst he's happy to stand and let me do it. He shakes his head after every pull and he has such a lot of main. Is it possible to use something like a solocomb on a Welshie, or would it ruin the main?

Thanks all (sorry for the hijack !!).

whatever you do don't go near it with a solocomb!! Do your pulling after excercise and just do a little bit each day......or if he really objects and you can bring yourself to do it, twitch him and get it over with, you can use the mane and tail rakes succesfully to pull some of the longer stuff out as well.

Ok M, thanks for the advice. I will start doing a few min each day. He doesn't object that much, just a little head shake......

my mum thinks that my girl looks better with a pulled mane:

we have shown her like that and most of the sec Ds i've seen showing have had slightly pulled manes, though natives should really have their manes left and be shown with one plait behind the ear :)

If its thick and unruly you can always thin it out first.

Top half of Shadows is thick so I use a mane/tail rake first and then pull it to tidy.

I did my boys tonight.... it used to be hogged... then was really really long for several years.. but he got hot and it got in the way so now it is pulled. I tend to pull it short before I need to plait it (hunting on sat) and then it lasts a while. though it is most definitely plaiting not showing length then.

He also head bangs as soon as I grab a hair and some of it is darn tough.... for the last bit tonight I twitched him and shall be doing this for the whole thing in future as it really does chill him out :) and save the arguments/frustrations!

just to show the styles frank has done..........

punk (please ignore his weight :(..... day after buying him)

I dont think you can call those 'various lengths' pmsl, poor frank has rather had the range!

Would you shout at me if I said I think the feathers are coming off for summer :D

and thanks binky, unfortunately he seems to think he looks smart too ;) he is very full of his 17yo self atm, swear he gets worse each year.

WHHHAAATTTTTTT.......NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep the feathers, keep the feathers, keep the feathers. Poor Frank will suffer from multiple personality disorder soon...a cob, a welsh, what next?!

Shadow looked ridiculous last year when he had the one shaved off, it made his already welsh dinner plate like hoof look even more stupid!!

*Faces wrath of TBC*

I'll take pics for you ;)

Frank has diddy feet really :) Its only because he gets so darn sweaty, and his back ones get particularly mank in the summer and I won't jump him without boots on and we don't show so we dont need them ;) well only workers but the M+Ms are normally 2 small regardless. still thinking about it atm. would let them grow back for winter :)

his summer coat is just coming through now (I clipped him all out a month ago) can't wait for him to be a liver again :)

Fudge looks stupid with the traditional length of Welsh pulled mane so I leave him completely natural, however he was going to have a show cob makeover for this years show season had he not broke himself.
