My lovely mother has bought me a champion ventair hat for my 21st but what shall i do with my old hat? I acctually have two but both have had cracking falls and shouldn't be worn even though neither are visibly cracked otherwise i'd probs give them to local riding school. Just feel a bit weird putting them in the bin.... is there a recycling thing like with mobiles?

I bought my first hat for 20 years last week and asked the same thing! I was told in no uncertain terms that the only place for an old hat is either a museum or the bin! You could always keep it for yard work, loading, clipping and the like unless you're like me and have never got used to using them for that sort of work and mine are going in the dustbin bag for tomorrow.

I have terrible trouble chucking stuff like that in the bin.... I mean they were at one time the latest saftey standards and good enough then

But times change and what was once top notch, is now old hat

I've always though hat manufacturers should run a voucher scheme where you could exchange you old hat that had been in a fall for, say £5 or 10% off a new one of the same make. It might encourage people to replace them like they say you should after a fall. It would also take dangerous ones off the secondhand market, and there ought to be some way of recycling them that hat manufacturers should be able to sort out.

lol, I didn't mean they're propper old school hats, one is an old mushroom style skull cap and the other is a modern endurance style ventilated hat.

I think i will keep the newer one for yard type stuff as suggested. The mushroom will have to just go in the bin I guess.

I keep mine for in hand things like loading or lunging when I might want a spare so myself and OH can wear one. I wouldn't buy one just for in hand so its better than not at all and I didn't fall hard on it.

Don't bin....cut off the straps, would not advise using a hammer to put holes in it, but drill them out. If they have had fall impact, they are not safe, especially not for riding schools. Trick is to make them beyond use so no-one will use them to ride in. Jigsaw in half might do it, if you have a handy other half with a destructive streak.
