We have 3 broodmares which we haven't used for 2 years, we can't afford to breed from them at the minute and we have too many as we all work full time and also compete amoungst trying to build ourself a lorry!!

They are all old but still very capale of breeding, we have had them since they were 4/5 years old. We still have all the offspring the oldest is 9 which we are about to sell along with a couple of the others.

loan them out? (but I have heard horrible stories)

Sorry didn't finish it!

16.3hh 18yrs (Julio Mariner x Farn) had 5 babies
16.2hh 16yrs (Dutch Falco/Animo x Event mare sorry cant think right now!) 3 babies
16hh 17yrs (Kings Servant) Grade B 1 baby

Does anyone have any Ideas?
Have they ever loaned their mares with success?
We will we find anyone who wants them??

I have a lovely 19 year old mare that we have had on breeding loan for the last 2/3 years. She originally came to us as the owner had put her in foal and wanted us to foal her down for them. Foalie all fine and owner didn't want to breed again so as her breeding was very good we asked if we could loan her. She has now been with us a total of 3 years and even the owner says she looks better now than she did when she had her at home. Think she likes the quiet life and living in a herd.
There are definately people out there that would loan from you but just make sure you have a good contract and go and do home checks get references before they go.
Advertise in H&H or on other horsey forums.

I loaned my mare out and she died

It was just unlucky.

Sorry to hear that Dieseldog. And thank you charliepup for letting me know that loaning isn't necessary a bad thing. None of the mares have competed for years and had an easy life, but I just feel a bit sorry for them stuck in field, we have'nt much grass so they end up in stables or muddy field with field shelter in winter, they don't owe us anything they have all had lovely foals, just think they could have a better home (not that we are a bad home!). We don't have much spare time to spend with them and think they would like some loving!
Think I will put advert in paper and see if I get any interest.
Just heard bad story last year that someone advertising for broodmares on loan had them a few months then took them to potters! Don't know the full details but put me off!

I have had 3 mares on breeding loan, and it worked out brilliantly. One mare is due to go back to her owner this year post weaning, the other is now staying with us, and her owner and I will breed alternate foals from her and the third was given to me.
We did have a contract but there needs to be faith from both parties.

I think Horsegroupie mentioned that she and Navalgem are looking for a broodmare....might be worth contacting them?

But possibly they want to buy rather than loan - and I don't really know exactly what type/breeding they are looking for.

Some friends of ours have just bought a brood mare from the Foaling Bank, (i think it was, or something similar!) to use as embrio transfer mares! Said mare is now havinbg the life or riley in the field with a lovely foal afoot!
perhaps contact an organisation similar and see if they know anyone who needs a mare!
Good luckl.
