What to do with Penfold

He is 11 years old, I bred him, he did dressage and show jumping up until last year, then started eventing .He has been consistant and came 6th in intro champs ,has qualified for prenovice regionals next year and just had one show jump down in his first novice,at Gatcombe [ video link below]
Next year my daughter is having a baby in June so he won't be able to event and he is going well.He is not straightforward, he is a head shaker but is fine in a net, he is not good in heavy traffic, weaves when travelling and has only ever gone out in the field with our mare and when we put another horse in he was VERY possessive.He would need an experienced home .
What should I do with him, sell him, loan him or rest him.

I'd say loan or rest - Shaab on here is a shining example of how a headshaker can be successfully loaned out and go great things - RachelFerd loaned him to her when she went to london and he has now gone intermediate and Shaab is doing fabulously with him, so it can be done.

With Penfold I think so many people would love the chance to compete him if you loaned him out - there are a lot of very competant homes out there and with loaning you can strictly monitor everything. Maybe even suggest he stays with you?
 
I think I would probably sell him. It's a long lay off whilst she has the baby and gets over the first few months and it's a long time for a horse to go lame/hurt itself etc. If he isn't being ridden the risk always seems higher just turned out.
I wouldn't loan him unless it's to a rider you know and admire, and most professional's want paying to ride.
He sounds so talented you could still get your enjoyment out of seeing him progress without having to own him.
I don't think any of the problems count a lot when a horse is so good, it's what he's like to ride and if he is sound that counts not his quirks.
Or if he's someone very special to you, turf him out and provided he has suitable company he will be fine.

Not sure what I would do but I think at 11 years I would think about selling and keeping rafi til kids bit older and then bring on another one or let the kids do it Pony Club here you come!!!!!!!
 
Thank you, when he was born I always said he was with us for life but I will have to think hard and long.Her dressage horse is not a problem ,he is only 5 and she can compete him all winter and maybe spring and he is ok for me to ride but Penfold is a totally different thing. She thinks she can do early and late events but she had a bad time ,health wise ,last baby and eventing is too dangerous , he has had 6 weeks rest and is due to come back into work next week and get fit for his lesson he won with Yogi B in January.
I wish there was someone near who could keep him ticking over but don't know anyone good enough really ,who would want to.

Its so hard knowing what to do with them...

I wished I'd sold Louis now when I turned into a chicken and got fat.... Ok he is doing great for Cass but in the end I'm going to be left with a stroppy, nutty, aged event horse that what will I do with..... I told Cass the other day once she has finished Eventing he we will have a great big BBQ

You were right last month when things started being forgotten, you said it was this.
I might save up and if I can afford a couple of months for him to go to Paul Rigby or someone like that, She could maybe ride him until the spring to get him fit , send him away for a couple of months and then I could just lunge him for a month or so and she might be back and able to carry on. As he is the only horse I have bred he is like part of the family and it is hard for me to trust anyone with him.Paul did ride him during her last pregnancy but he wasn't eventing then. It is a thought .

OHHHHHH!!!! Congrats!!!!! Didnt know she was having another!!!!!!! Well, I would, in MHO I would get someone you can trust/know/ to ride and keep him ticking over..... sharer at your yard?? I would not sell......just means you will have to save a little (through not competing??) and send him to your friends? Hey, maybe Jlav may want a horse to ride!!!!!!

Don't think she would want an eventer,He was ridden today ,first time after his holiday and he was very well and walked out lovely THEN cantered all the way home, collected ,of course.
She has had a couple of offers locally but they don't realise yet that he is not the easiest to ride and the enormous trot throws you ,so you have to be a very good rider. I will keep you posted ,Rafi is no problem ,I can ride him
 
Congrats on new grandbaby-to-be but don't envy you your dilemma. I would just say take your time and you will make the right decision
