We have a field with four horses about 2 acers. It was rolled but not fertilised. Two horses are out at night. Two a few hours in the day. But the grass isn't doing well. I'm in a dilemma what to do with it.
Section a bit off to rest it?
Fertilise it? But not sure the others would want that so the field could be put in two and we fertilise our half.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Four horses on 2 acres is never going to provide good grazing for them - really you need to regard it as an exercise area and that you need to feed hay all year round. You could divide it in two and rest half, but in the three weeks you need you will have to feed plenty of forage, and when you swap them around they will strip it in a few days.

The only way to make it work is to cut turnout down to 8hrs/day in summer and 4hrs/day in winter, stabling the rest of the time. Or cut down the number of horses on the land.

I have 1 horse, 1 pony and 4 sheep on 2 acres BUT..

In the summer...

Big horse is only out at night and muzzled
Pony is only out for a few hours at night muzzled
Sheep out all the time.

Winter...
No sheep
Horse (& pony occasionally) out during the day

There is no way I could have 4 horses out on that amount all year round and expect there to be enough grass. I would def. consider feeding hay all year round or cut down on numbers or find extra grazing.

2 horses are out over night they come in in the morning to a net and feed for the day and go back out at night. They other two go out for a couple of bours in the day. It is summer time turn out only.
