What to do?

After a bit of unbias advice as I'm having a dilema at the moment!

I brought my horse Oscar in Feb with a view to jumping, dressage etc. I've had Ty for nearly two years and he went on loan but came back just after I'd brought Oscar!

Ty went on loan as a happy hacker - he's blind in one eye and has suspsected hock spavin (which will prob be diagnosed in a few weeks when he goes to horsepital).

So, the dilema is that I'm hoping to start an Access course in September so that I can go uni next year which will mean two evenings a week and alot of home study.

The boys are on DIY near to me but I really don't think I'll be able to cope with both of them.

I know I'm an idiot and should have thought about Ty potentially coming back but I didn't.

I don't want to sell Ty - I love him to bits and hopefully if we can get his hocks right he'll atleast be a nice hacking horse. I also would never want him to get into the wrong hands as he is 'quirky'.

So I'm really tearing my hair out as to whether now is a good time to sell Oscar? I really don't want to but I have to be realistic - I ahve a great sharer but the money and time aspects are all stacked against me.

I had big plans of taking him out and competing but due to financial reasons I now can't afford a box/lorry so really he is being wasted. He showjumped and hunted in Ireland and really is a talented little horse.

Please don't flame me for being an idiot - I realise I should never have brought him and I really cannot see another option than to sell him x
 
Id sell Osc, if you are that attached to Ty. Although my head says, sell Ty

No your not an idiot.......just things don't go the way we want! Me personally would sell Oscar,as you sound as if you will have 'alot on your plate'...as the saying goes,and will you have the time to do Oscar the justice he needs...TBH,I think you have answered this in your post,Good Luck with what ever you decide.

I know - he's probably worth £500 though and is quirky.....I just feel so bloody attached to the stupid thing!

I just think with the right rider, Oscar really could be a nice little horse for someone.....just always upsetting isn't it?

I do have a good job but I feel trapped. I know that's ridiculous but I never went to uni and am just doing the 9 to 5 and hating it.

That's a whole other bundle of issues though

Could you not find a longterm loan for Oscar? Where he could be competed and things? Or would selling him free up some money to support you through further education? I think you know that you could never sell Ty so not an option!

I just figured that I'd rather not lose loads of money on a horse (again) as I have on Ty. Once he hits 10 next year I'm guessing he'll be worth a little less. Someone has kindly said I can borrow their lorry over the next few months so I'm going to get Oscar out and about so we can add some stuff to his CV.

I really feel for you, such a difficult decision to make that I haven't had experience of, but I am in my 2nd year of a full time degree with 1 horse on DIY and its v v hard work and a lot of prioritising..I'm terrified about the 3rd year and determined to get a 1st so will be working all summer! Would you still be working as well as doing the access course, what do you want to do?
I think you know what you're going to do already, I guess you will have Ty for life which is great, and if you haven't had Oscar long then you're not going to have the same bond with him I guess, but how about putting him out on loan rather than selling him outright, or do you need the money for your course?

Both cost the same to keep

You can do what you want on one but not the other.

If it was me I would sell Ty - he would go to a good home as a happy hacker - I am sure he could do some low level rc showing/dressage also. IMO if you put him up for £1800 you would probably get it!!!
 
I think I would sell Ty, I know you are attached to him but I would like the horse you can get out and about so you have something else other than study.
I sold my pony for the same reason,I was too big and couldnt do what I wanted so sold her to a lovely home, best thing I ever did.

I have a great sharer though and she'll do 4/5 days a week and I guess it's only for an academic year.

I don't want to loan Oscar as I lost £2000 on Ty and i can't do the same on Oscar by him being loaned out.

He's a great horse but we don't have that strong bond yet so it's best he goes somewhere that he'll be used while he's still young.

and now he has hock spavin (suspected) to add to his list of qualities. Plus, after loaning him out over the winter I really don't think i could get rid of him now.

I would get money back on Oscar (possibly a bit more once he's done some stuff over the summer) so that's alot more than I'd get for Ty.....

Plus, I won't have time to compete and just need a happy hacker - Oscar needs to be out competing as he loves his work.

Rung Lauren earlier so hopefully get some sessions booked in with Oscar and my sharer to get the jumping flowing

For sale for light riding club activity and hacking home. Ty would suit someone that wants a horse to love but enjoys a 'slower pace!' . It is a very sad sale for me, I cannot affort two horses and he cannot do what I want him to do - unfortunately I now need to sell him to focus on my youngster.

£1800 including some wardrobe. Would consider PERMANENT loan to right home in local area.

You then get people on the phone, and explain his problems. You SELL him - ie emphasise his good points. Dont go all mad on blindness and hock spavin...just say that you bought him and didnt realise that he had sight problems for months (which is the truth) and now he has to got suspected hock spavins (ALSO the truth) and your vet is happy for him to go and do happy hacking and riding club lower level (ALSO THE TRUTH!!!) Tell them you are happy to negotiate on price etc.

With careful management and consideration, horses with joint problems are capeable of leading lives doing just as I said above. He just wont do what you want him to do, so you need to sell. Simple - they are too bloody expensive to keep as pets love! Especially around here....

He would suit half the bloody middle aged women on my yard who are only interested in coffee and hour long hacks four times a week.

I know its hard, but sometimes you have to cut your losses. IMO he has been nothing but problematic to you - you have lost enough, now gain something for you.

As someone told me - the horse only remembers who fed him that morning - so long as you sell him to a good home, Ty really will not care hon. They are not as loyal to us as we are to them!!!

PS the above is true...I sold my pony (who used to come to call...for call read dinner) and went to see him at his new home. Called him - NOTHING, He didnt even look up.

That was a week after I sold him!!!!!
