Hi everyone,

As some of you might remember I have been waiting for Freds old owner to get back to me about his medical history, numerous problems etc and I feel like I have given her long enough. Fair enough, she is probably very upset/emotional about the turn of events but Farmkey have now left her several messages and written two letters and they even redirected a letter I wrote to her explaining that I wasn't angry with her and all I wanted was to know where to go from here with Fred.

Anyway, I am quite angry now

because I have realised that after four weeks, she probably won't be contacting me

So, where do I go from here? Do I just retire him or give him one last chance? When he was with his previous owner he was apparently a successful dressage beasty so I am inclined to think that perhaps the reason she sent him to get pts was that she couldn't afford to keep a light hack and maybe claimed loss of use through her insurance??

When I took him on you would barely know he was lame, he just has a strange way of going. The vet told me to rest him for six months and to see what happens but he then came back quite lame on more than one leg. Now I know about the kissing spine operation I am inclined to think that his lameness is mechanical and perhaps worsened when he has no muscle to support his back which would explain a fair few things.

The vet had told me to put him on bute for a while and take it from there so I did and there was absolutely no change in his way of going...

Should I long rein/lunge/walk out in hand for a few weeks and then buy the most comfy saddle on the market and get back on????

Sorry about the long arsed essay!! I hate being a horse owner

I do not know the background of your previous posts, I am fairly new.

If the horse has mechanical back pain, I recommend a physio assessment. She will be able to advise you on exercises and treatment to help him gain muscle bulk. You will need a referral from your vet for this remember.

It is entirely possible that his previous owner pulled a fast one, but the sad thing is that the horse and you are paying for it.

I would give Fred every chance you can.

My horse can no longer be ridden and although I am devastated, I appreciate that he is still here with me and I will look after him for life.

Good luck

Its a shame that she doesn't want to get in touch but she's maybe decided that she just can't face it. Ultimately you don't know the circumstances in which she decided to get rid of Fred and there maybe more to it than meets the eye.

As for Fred, give him one last shot and see how it goes - as suggested above get a physio assessment and also get a decent saddler out to have a look - he might be ok for hacking at the end of it all.

Good luck

Thanks to all of you

I am moving to Edinburgh at the end of this month and so I am extremely pleased that I will actually be able to get physios/chiros/osteos etc because up here it is impossible to get anything other than a sports massage...

I completely understand that his old owner might not be able to face the situation but it leaves myself and my beautiful horseo in an annoying situation and I come home everyday hoping there might be a letter or email but there never is and probably never will be. I think it just makes me really cross that someone out there knows everything I want to know and her vet could really help Fred out

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...I feel a little better for that

Yes, I did that already because when she never replied to the messages Farmkey left for her, I wrote a letter and part of it said that I understood her feelings on the matter but could she just forward her vets name and address?? She hasn't

ithink the chances of getting anything from her now is unlikely. I think you will just have to treat him like he came to you with no history and get the vet and chiro etc to asess him and make your decision based on that.
What a shame that she hasn't shown an interest in him or any care for his welfare. Like someone else says, you don't know the circumstances. very frustrationg for you tho'

Yeah, I have already tried that one too...the receptionists all said that in order for them to pass over results, they need the name of the owner as well as the name of the horse. I tried all the big ones that would do kissing spine operations near in and around Surrey.

The vet has done a full lameness workup and spinal x-rays etc. Nothing has ever been conclusive and its a lot of stress and hassle for Fred to keep on taking him back and forth and being poked and prodded when we could, in theory, get all his results from his previous vet
