Nothing is the answer but your opinions are welcome. Some friends of friends are getting a new horse, their last horse was never turned out as they were scared it would get injured in the field (turned out with one other). It stood in all day often with no hay and no likit, treat ball etc and ridden twice at the weekend. Just feel desperately sorry for their next horse

Just because someone has slightly different beliefs to horse care then yourself does not make them a bad owner. It is so easy to point fingers, but the majority of the time I have seen fingers pointed the inaccuracies are HUGE!
 
Is there a reason why they provide it with no hay or boredom breakers? Do they not know any better? We've had one like that on our yard and i've hinted to them by offering them a loan of my treat ball thing and offered them a shot of a likit. I've lent the likit to a few people who've subsequently bought one.
Just an idea.

NO OMG! Do they keep it at livery or at home?
Have you broached the subject at all with them?

If it is at livery than you could always make an anon commplaint to YO, there is also the ILPH i'm sure they would have something to say.

I however would find it very difficult to keep my mouth shut and would have to say something to the owners however it will prob fall on deaf ears as these types think thy know it all anyhew!

Is there a reason for this have they had a bad experience in the past?
 
I have 1 horse that would like to be out 24/7 and the other wants to be in all the time. I wouldnt be so interested in what others do with their horse as long as it isnt neglected it isnt really going to know any different lifestyle exists. If their routine doesnt suit the new horse, it will become apparent when they get it out to ride!
 
I used to know a woman who always kept her young Quarter Horse in, she said that he 'didn't mind at all'. He was her second horse and they both box walked funnily enough and the youngster became such a handful that she was too scared to ride him! I can't bear the idea of them being stuck in all day every day, they need to stretch their legs and minds outside with their chums even if only for a short time. Nice for them to have a roll, nibble some grass, eat mud, indulge in a bit of social grooming or just have a mooch around.
 
Not an ideal situation by all means, but one that most horses here in Argentina cope with. At our yard, the majority are tied under a tree all day and stabled at night. Only a very few are exercised daily and even the luckiest of horses (PF!) has only a small enclosure/pen for turnout. Incidentally, she's the only one with a vice

Certainly I would try to reeducate your acqaintances and suggest that there horse would be much calmer and relaxed if turned out during the day.
