I have a 14 year difficult Trakehner that I need to find a new home for after owning him for five years. He is very easy to do generally but difficult under saddle. He has had physical issues and is reasonably sound, certainly hacking sound, but this is not what I want to do. I have tried my heart out for this horse but to no avail!

I am now in the situation where I need to find a new home for him, is it possible I could find him a hacking home although he is not the easiest (safe though), or find somewhere where he could be turned away but looked after. I don't have these facilities in the area unless I put him on full livery somewhere which will cost me a fortune and prevent me from being able to get another....

Any thoughts, suggestions, offers welcome.....

Thanks in advance!

You could try advertising him as a hack for a rider who is not interested in competing, or as a companion animal, if he really isn't rideable. You could also consider loaning him out in either of these capacities, if you want to be able to keep an eye on him.

He is not dangerous by any means, just obnoxious, rude, and generally not straightforward!! He is very good to hack so I think this is probably my best route, as in to find a hacking home for him, I just generally know that these homes want a horse that is very low maintenance, and he is a warmblood so will need stabling in the winter at least, shoes etc etc.

I think I am going to have to find a retirement livery for him considering the above as although I am at my wits end with him I need to make sure he goes somewhere where he will be happy and looked after.

Would he be sound enough to do endurance? There are some very competant riders out there who do nothing but 'hack'.
