Next Saturday my extremely lively four year old is allowed to be turned out and begin 10 mins work on the lunge daily following a period of box rest after surgery on his back. I know he is going to be a complete fruit loop so he will not be going into a slippery field and the sand school is favourite, booted upto his eyeballs and at least 12 ACP down his neck. My dilemma is, do I turn out first and then lunge (at different times of the day) or vice versa, the liklihood is that he will go nuts whatever I do, I'm dreading it.
Advice please.

Turn him out, well protected. Then lunge later. Hopefully the real ye-ha bit will go when in the field so hopefully he will be better on the lunge.

I would lunge first (provided he is usually good to lunge) and let him get some of the freshness out whilst still relatively controlled and on a good surface, hopefully then he should be a little tired when you turn him out. I would make sure you have good gloves and a hat on though in case it all gets a bit too exciting! Put him out in a field with lots of grass then hopefully he will also be concerned with stuffing his face than running about. Good luck.
