We have two ponies but have just purchased a new one as one of our ponies is a very elderly lady and ready to retire. We love her dearly but OH says we have not got the room for 3 and old lady pony has to go to a new home (she is on loan to us we have had her for 5 years). Feel so terrible, like in with the young and out with the old. Would love her to stay with us for the rest of her days but it's causing big rows in our house. Dd is also gutted. What do I do? Try and find her a lovely retirement home (scary as you never know what will happen to them) or fight my corner harder....or hide her??!!!

There's no way I would ever let the OH force out an oldie , but then he has nearly 25 years off comprehensive training .
Keep the pony and send the OH for remedial training.

This ^^

Or agree sweetly but let your OH know you will be chucking him out when he gets too old :D

I agree. She is such a lovely pony she deserves a happy life now. Think it will just take a reallllllly loooooooooong time to find her anywhere else. We only have two stables but bugger it, she can come in in bad weather, the younger two can winter out :)

Get rid of the newer one, has a much better chance of finding a new home then the oldie who deserves to live out the rest of her days in familiar surroundings.

Exactly!
Did you not discuss this before getting the new pony? Our retired cob who admittedly has been with us for 20 yrs owes us absolutely nothing and is with us for the rest of her healthy life. Your OH needs to think about the message to your child/ren about disposability of living creatures.

Could the owner take her back?

TBH if I was in your situation, I would have found a new home for the 'oldie' before getting another.....

You have 3 options:

- Keep her and risk the wrath of the OH!!!
- Speak to owner and see if they could have her back
- Find her a new home as a companion

Hope you find a solution.

Tell your OH you have advertised old pony, but don't mention you have worded it like this :

Ugly old bat for sale as can barely stand on 3 legs. Not suitable for children as bucks and bites, and will bolt if cars are going a bit fast. Can be lightly ridden but please make sure you have your sticky bum jods on as this one goes like the clappers and there ain't no stoppin her. Payments through Paypay welcome, £3,500 ONO to good home (aka - one with loads of patience)

I cannot understand why you bought a younger animal before you sorted out what would happen to the older one. I am aware that not everyone does what we do, which is give all our animals a home for life, however to I do find it pretty disgusting that you did not give thought to the fate of the horse you already had first.

With you saying you would need to rehome, I assume pony doesn't have the option of a lovely retirement home with the owner. Tbh, you should have actually thought about it before buying the upgrade pony. I would never rehome a retired oldie. And I wouldn't be with a man who expected me to either. He'd go first. Why not have a nice outing as a couple to a bottom end sales & see what happens to the oldies that get passed on to make space for the new? Why on earth would anyone, except for sympathy, take on a retired pony so you can have a new riding one? Build another stable & keep it. Or at least have the decency to pts at home, instead of passing it on to a probably short & unpleasant future.

I'd PTS if you're not going to keep the old one. If you want to be purely practical, send her back to the owner since she's only on loan to you. If owner doesn't like that, let them PTS their old pony.

Just out of interest, was having three discussed with your OH before you bought the third? If not, I guess you've been a bit daft. If it was discussed and now he's changed his mind, he's being out of order IMO. Who does he think is going to want an old retired pony? After all, he doesn't want it.
