I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, so apologies if it isn't.

My rising 5 year old gelding has been backed and ridden away since last July and has been coming on brilliantly. My YO [who started him and has been continuing with him to make sure he is established] and I have agreed we will take him out to some low level dressage events just to get him some experience and used to the atmosphere.

He is very sensible as youngsters go, not sharp, spooky or silly. Saying that, if he did decide to be silly we would stand out as he is a big dun! :D

In the meantime, a friend at the yard has asked if I would like to do the West Wycombe sponsored ride. I really like the idea [we won't jump anything...he's not really showing an aptitude for that just yet!!] as we would just walk and trot round and she can do a few jumps if she wants to do so. My only concern is, having never been to one before, what on earth do I expect? I think it would do him good but I don't want to overface him, and I have heard horror stories about them as well.

If anyone has any experiences, tips etc it would be appreciated. I think the experience would do me good as I had a confidence knock a couple of years back and whilst I have the odd wobble, part of me is, if we do it, looking forward to it.

Thanks :)

What do you mean "fun time"?

He hacks out with other horses, and walks, trots and has cantered a few times whilst out and pulls up all ok, no arguments :D

I guess that's what I mean - has he been out with other horses and had a jolly good canter and gallop to blow the cobwebs away???

If yes - go on the sponsored ride.

If no - then stay at home until he has.
