Basically looking for advice on what to feed my new boy.
He is stabled through the winter and can get very fizzy and spooky.
Started feeding Brewers Yeast for the spookiness, but wondering if i could help him out with the feed!
He is having a scoop of spillers Horse & Pony Nuts and a scoop of Simple Systems Lucie Stalks at the moment.
Cod Liver Oil
Magnesium
Swede and Parsnips

Any suggestions greatly received, wondered if i could improve his diet really.

Have u got back to Simple Systems as I find them very good with advice etc. They might suggest cutting out the nuts.
Have you given the SS feed time to work ?

i'd feed hay/haylage plus fibre only, cut out the nuts completely. i feed a mix of readigrass, hi-fi and alfa-a (ratios depend on how much energy the horse has), plus a bit of sugarbeet for weight gain if necessary. in my yard, only horses which can't hold condition get any cereals.

So cut the nuts out completley?
Feed more fibre!
He is a very good dooer, so not a problem
The alfa-a i must admit i have not heard of!
Is that like the dengie stuff?
I am up for giving anything ago as he has too much energy for me!

I think that I am right in saying that the lucie stalks are part of the alfalfa plant which is where alfa a is derived from. My horse becomes incredibly fizzy, to the point where he is really naughty to ride on alfa a, apparently it has more energy than cool mix. Not sure if that is right, but I do know it sent my horse off his nut!

Basically I would feed something like Hi Fi Lite or supermolichop lite with a vit and mineral supplement keeping the Brewers yeast if you feel it helps. This should cut out the things that are likely to exacerbate the problem of him having too much energy

The lucie stalks are alfalfa under a different name. (Lucerne and Alfalfa are basically the same plant)

Id cut out the nuts, feed ad lib hay and offer a bucket feed of normal grass chaff (not Alpha A) with your supplements and veggies in.

Readigrass or Pure Grass maybe. If you cant get those then something like Hi Fi (not the lite one just the normal one) or Graze On.

I think all you really need to be feeding at the moment is fibrous bulk, you dont have weight issues but sounds like you do have temperament issues so the more fibre you can shove through the better really.

Thank you so much for that will go out and buy some new food for my boy.
Hopefully it will sort us out.
