What to feed a 2yo native?

Well my two are out 24/7 without rugs, share their field with sheep to keep grass down, but luckily it is hill grass and not rich.

In addition to the grass they are asking for hay (they go up to hayshed door and knock on it!), so they get a small section of last years hay between them morning and evening.

I give them a small amount of Dengie good doer, plus a couple of handfuls of high fibre nuts. They have both done well over the last 12 months and grown a lot, so think this diet is right for them. When the weather gets worse and there really is no goodness in the grass I will increase the hard feed and hay.

I would not be giving any feed- just forage. A native should not need any more. The rest is just money down the drain.

The feed companies won't like to hear that!

But totally agree. Look at their condition and feed accordingly.

Having said that, they'll probably need a salt block. Mine get Red Rockies.

I agree natives need very little but good hay. However my Dales is out with my 17hh WB who does need some hard feed, so until I start stabling the pair if the weather get bad enough I feed in the field. I have 5 horses/ponies so cannot bring the WB out for feed. He will get the lion' share though and I only feed high fibre feeds and adlib hay.

Thank you all, so the fibre based diet my filly is getting should be fine - phew. Was just a little worried as its years and years since I've had a native youngster. Will get her another lick for her stable - she demolished the last one- cant put one out in the field cause of the sheep.
