I need some help, for over 6 years I loaned a horse and she was very excitable and a bit of a stress head, towards the end the owner had her on Dengie Complement mix which seemed to really work. I am now about to buy this horse as she has come up for sale and been put through the mill this last year since I brought my own and now my heart is leading my head and made a offer and now she is mine. (sorry bit of a long story) I need to find a feed which will calm her down but put condition on as she looks awful now no outline and just needs a good pick me up without fizzing her up, she will be worked everyday and under no circumstance can she has carrots, I have brilliant hay and she can have as much as she likes but need some advise as I am unable to buy Dengie complement mix locally and have to order it. Just wondered if there is anything else I can give her.

Thanks

i would feed her a very high fibre diet, ad lib hay, and a good chaff (hoof kind) and a balancer or supplement, as for top line that can only be gained by correct work

Thank you, shee needs bringing back into work slowly as been pushed from pillar to post so will be working on the outline. Thanks for your reply.

Fibre based feeds - something like Hi Fibre Cubes. A good feed balancer. Spring grass, and as you say ad lib hay.

Small feeds fed three or four times a day as well, rather than a bulky two feed regime.

I wouldn't feed mix - it can have a heating mix on some horses (like mine) because peas and maize can be included, even cool mix's

hi fibre cubes and chaff , little bit of speedibeet with tons of hay, keeps my tb sane and the weight on. start off simple and then you can always change up if you need too. good luck.

I have the same problem with my older mare. I feed top-line cubes and she doesn't "fizz up" on those.
With her it seems to be the molasses that goes to her head.

Ring some of the feed helplines for advice - they are really helpful. Something high fibre I would say - like D+H Pasture Nuts - be careful with sugar beet it can make the odd one potty!!

You need to feed your horse a diet that is high in fibre and oil, but low in starch. Starch can cause excitability in some sensitive horses, so the lower the starch the better really for this horse! Fibre and oil are non heating sources of calories so should help to put the weight on without fizzyness! I cannot recommend highly enough Winergy Equilibrium Growth - i used it to build up my neurotic gelding, and now he's just on the Low Energy. Its so easy to use, you dont need to feed anything else with it, as its got all the vits and mins in it. It looks like a chaff which is a bit weird but Tiggy loves it!!

I'd suggest contacting the helpline, they're really helpful!!
Growth also has a good protein level in it, so will provide all the building blocks your horse needs for building up topline. Good luck

What about high oil feeds such as Baileys Outshine or Saracen Equijewel? You could add these to a high fibre diet to give extra calories. Or cooked linseed meal.

If she's fussy & needs some mix to tempt her to eat have a look at Saracen ReLeve which is cereal free, low starch, non-fizzy making but looks like a conventional mix.

I agree with Kittykatcat, I needed something to cut down on the starch, I too am feeding wynergy. I called the advice line and they were really helpful. I was advised to put her on the equilibrium senior although she is not old. It only has about 3% starch. I noticed a difference in about 5 days.
