I want to get a complete feed for my mare after being advised by my instructor and vet that she need something more!

She's as laid back as can be , so lazy and would be content just standing around.
she's 13.2hh , 3 year old traditional cob she's a good doer on turnout grass and hay at the moment...
I spoke to baileys and topspec nutritionists..Baileys recommend local and no.13 oat free pony and horse mix
topspin said topchop and lite balancer I've no experience with either..
anyone got any recommendations or advice? I want to keep the cost down as i have another horse one medical feed and i know it can get crazy!!

Thanks in advance

If she's a good doer i wouldn't be too keen to pump food into her. She's so young and a lot of energy could be going into developing. Also if she's just broken its all new to her so mentally she might be struggling to go forward a bit. What kind of workload is she doing that you are finding her lazy? When my little cob a similar age is being broken next year, all i'l be expecting from her is basic hacking.

Is she thin? Fat? Just right? What's the grazing like? Cobs tend to be on the podgy side, and I haven't fed mine ANY hard feed in over 12 years (including the youngsters), so it's quite unlikely that yours will need much, if any, grain feed. Of course a feed company will advise you to feed their products, that's what they do: sell you stuff.

I certainly wouldn't be givingher any quantity of feed.

I use Top Spec Racing Balancer on one of mine to give her a bit more go, it doesn't (unfortunately) turn her into a racehorse! However it does mean she is more inclined to exercise without her putting on weight - which is what fatties do when you give them higher energy feeds :)

She was broken around may time and up until then we just took things slowly little 5 minute walks , we have only recently got a school so all she is doing is learning how to work in the school in walk she isn't and trot.

And that is all she needs to do until next spring; keep it straight lines not ever turning circles; cob or not, they can still have problems with too much too soon.

She honestly doesn't need any energy feed to do walk work for short periods, in fact she should get enough energy from her grazing or hay to do what work you are asking but feed wise I would go with the Lo Cal as it'll give her all the vitamins and minerals she needs without bulk (you can feed it without anything else if she doesn't bolt her feed)
