I've been taking it slowly with Ruby, tried leaving her out 24/7 with plenty of grass but she hates staying out at night! I had to drag her back to the field, literally, so she is now in at night and out during the day.

I have had her 6 weeks now.

She just gets a large double handful of herbal Chop and scoop of calm and condition with Baileys lo cal balancer and ad lib haylage at night (which she does eat loads of!)

But she does'nt seem to be putting any weight on. She is very laid back and calm, does'nt get stressy or worked up. She is ridden 6 times a week, only for 20 mins when schooled or 1 hr hack trying to slowly build up some muscle.

So what do I feed her to put some condition on, without sending her silly!

Linseed or an oil based chaff. My elderly cob has linseed lozenges added to his feeds and it does help put flesh on very quickly. You are doing the right thing by tackling weight gain very slowly and remember your horse will have been bred to be lean.

I would continue to give her as much quality haylage and fibre as she will eat. If she isnt happy out she is better coming in rather than stressing in the field.

I have found Baileys Number 4 really good for my exracers, also as Spaniel says linseed is very good too.

The thing I found that really works is Top Spec balancer, I honestly couldn't believe the difference it made to my boy.

I would go fo one of the winergy feeds personally you feed quite alot but there is no need to add chaff and it takes ages for them to eat. I have just finsihed their trial for their new conditioning feed and have been mighty impressed with everything the whole way through

When trying to put weight on my tbx i used build up and lots of chaff, something like alfa oil. I did find that the build up mix made him a bit fizzy but he was absolutely fine with build up cubes.
Also had some good results using barley but this can have different affects on them too.
And possibly something like blue chipe etc but can get expensive...

Coligone is really good for exracers (even when they're not showing signs of stress it can still be a result of previous stress) I've had good results with this - also I've had H on Allen & Page Calm and Condition and it's FAB! Doesn't blow their mind and really does help steady weight gain - It's like a crumbly bran mash and they love it too! I'd highly recommend this!

I have her on the calm and condition already, she loves it!

So which Coligone and how much do you reccommend? She is so chilled my 5yr old neice has walked and trotted her on the lunge, could'nt do that with her on May!!

I use Winergy on both my exracers and it works a treat! I never need to worry about keeping weight on them or them having too much or too little energy, plus you dont need to feed it with anything else as its a complete feed so I find it really really convenient to use....

OH's ex racer is on Alfa A Oil, TopSpec and Alfa Beet. He looks brilliant, shines like glass even when filthy dirty, is very relaxed (wasn't when he arrived!!!) and has a good amount of weight.

Another one who has just finished the winergy feed trail, Big trakehner mare put on 29kg in a month and anglo arab type who I've had for 11 years and is a nightmare to keep weight on put on 26kg in a month.

Can't reccomend highly enough - I'd give them a call.

My friend has one of these, and she has started her on TopSpec Balancer and the Conditioning cubes by TopSpec... her mare is looking fab now, it has made a real difference without any fizz

Winergy all the way for me ive had my horses on it for 2 months now & my Underweight TB is now a lovely weight. It also hasnt hyped him up which is good.

If she doesn't seem to fizz up at all then it should be pretty easy! There are a huge variety of conditioning feeds, but they do need to be fed at the recommended rate to make an improvement in condition. Have you tried feeding the Calm & Condition at the recommended rate for her size and workload? If you are feeding at the recommended rate you won't need to add a balancer as well, as the feed will supply all the vits/mins she needs.
