What To Feed My New Yearling TB X Paint ! Help ?

Hiya,

Erm well title says it all ! I am getting a TB X Paint yearling and just wondered what you reccomended feeding her ? Because I know they need all their proteins and goodness etc to grow but I also read if they have to much feed or a certain type they can grow too quickly and get a disease ? Can't remember what it is called ! :S So what would you reccomend to feed her ? Please help ! :)

Just to add that she will be stabled all the time for a while as she is unhandled and needs to get used to a trust people hence why she is being stabled ! :) Also she will probs be on hay ? As that's what my 4 year old is on as my 4 year old gets over excited on haylage but the yearling willl have all the hay she can eat !? :) x
 
Hay is great, as long as its not dusty. I feed hayledge simply because i am fed up of wasting money on bad quality hay, that i have purchased with the promise of "good quality". I think what feed balancer you use is up to you, i have always used low cal because my pony is a welsh cob and good doer.
I am also a fan of Alfalfa because its high in protein and good for muscle development. All my youngsters have been brought up with hay/hayledge and balancer as the main part of the diet and have not had one with any problems yet. :)
 
If you are feeding adlib hay then the only thing she ought to need is a balancer aimed at youngstock.
Baileys do a stud balancer which is for foals from 3 months.
 
Have a look at D & H Suregrow. It's especially formulated for growing youngsters (not just TBs) and you feed very little of it and don't need to add anything else either other than good hay/haylage. Ring them, they're very helpful and will give you good advice not just about their own feeds. I'm not a fan of alfalfa for any horse let alone youngsters and you won't need to add anything extra to the Suregrow which makes life very simple; never had one yet that doesn't like it or do well on it. I brought up the two foster boys Harry and Freddy on just that, they always looked a picture of health and didn't have any growth spurts just normal growth. No, I don't work for them but I appreciate what a good feed it is.
