We're just moved to a DIY yard after being out to grass over the summer due to unforeseen circumstances she hasn't been riden for ages and has put on an enormous amount of weight. Now we have moved to a nice yard, I'd like to get her back into light work. But I don't know what our routine should be? Most of the other horses are fed in the morning at the same time. Should I keep her turned out longer and keep her on grass or bring her in and feed her a small amount of something with the rest of them?
I was confident in my decisions before moving to a yard!
Thanks in advance

When you say they are all fed in the morning do you mean they are in at night, fed then turned out or they are out, brought in and fed?

If they are brought in just for a feed then I would be inclined to leave her out unless you bring her in to get off of the grass for the day, in that case I would just give a net of soaked hay until she gets put out again, if she is not used to getting a feed she will not miss it or even know what the others get, if you feel the need to give something in a bucket or want to give a supplement then use a very small quantity of low calorie feed such as fast fibre/ speedibeet or an unmolassed chaff, you need to keep the calories down and gradually increase the exercise, leaving her without a rug as the temperatures drop and the grass quality goes should help her drop some weight, try not to go by what other people do, most horses are overfed and underworked, it is not good for them to be carrying too much weight so be tough and confident with your decisions.
