I was told not to change my pregnant mare's feed until the last three months when she would need a special feed. She's now at that point and so I was wondering what I should feed her? She's six years old this year and cob x hackney (middleweight). Usually she has two small meals a day, each consisting of half a scoop of Spillers Happy Hoof. She's a good doer who tends to be a bit on the porky side although we've been very careful not to let her get overweight this winter and so she's looking just right at the moment

She also suffered from suspected low-grade laminitis once a year ago. She is presently not in work but resting in the field, living out, and is usually given some hay in the morning.
Any advice and recommendations would be greatly appreciated as I've googled 'feeding pregnant mares' and it seems almost every horse feed company does some kind of feed for in foal mares! I like the look of baileys stud balancer...

It's a choice I would be happy with I think! As she's a cob cross I'd probably use Baileys LoCal balancer for another six weeks or so and then change to the stud balancer for the last six weeks. Providing you feed the correct amount and she doesn't lose any weight after foaling, that should be sufficient but if she does lose weight or have trouble supplying enough milk to the foal, you could always add their stud cubes or mix (the cubes are less expensive!)
