I have two horses that i need help on changing their feeds, my 16.3hh is on alpha-a, competition mix, barley rings and fibre performance whereas my 14.2hh is on hi-fi and pasture mix with a bit of oil. I find that both these feeds are not benefitting my horses overall and i want a few different opinions rather than the feed store that i go to as this is what they recommended but i just want to be sure.

I have a 16.3hh hunter who is about 650kg an is in hard work. He is stabled at night and in the field during the day if not being worked. He needs 6.5kg of concentrates a day. Any ideas of what i should feed him?

I also have a 14.2hh cob who is about 400kg and my daughter only hacks him on the weekend, the rest of the time he lives out. During the colder months we need to feed him 1.5kg of concentrates a day. Any ideas on what to feed him?

Thanks, Paige

What do you mean by 'not doing well', are they over/under weight hard to manage, look poor?

How much forage do they get?

They are starting to look a little under weight, my 16.3hh gets 2 full scoops of alpha-a in each feed, my 14.2hh gets 1 full scoop of hi-fi. They each get two feeds a day. Thats why i've started using barley rings as it helps them put on a bit of weight.

Are they getting enough hay or haylage? They seem to be getting a lot of concentrates, so wonder if they are not getting enough forage if they are both losing weight.

well i give my 16.3hh nearly 10kg of hay a day and my 14.2hh 8kg of hay, so i may increase their forage and look into a conditioning mix. Thanks

If they are both losing weight then I would give them as much hay as they will eat before increasing the concentrates any further.
