Inkys showing season is looming. He has been on alfa a lite, topspec balancer and topspec cool and condition but he needs to lose some weight and i feel this feed is just putting it on and loosing his topline

He does some work around 5 days a week, a mixture of free lunging ( ten mins trot, ten mins walk ) and walking in hand, so he isnt worked hard compared to bigger horses

I was thinking of changing to a chaff and a good cool mix/pasture mix but there are so many out there i wouldnt know which to choose!

Any knowledgeable feed peeps recommend me a new feeding regime?? I wasnt something that will give him enough calories to keep him in good condition, increase his topline without putting on the weight.

Could you just knock out the cool and condition and see how he goes? Then you could always just swap to Alfa A Original if you think he needs a little more than the Lite provides. My big chap (at least compared to your guy!) has been on Hi-Fi and Top Spec all winter (with a little Speedibeet latterly) and has a nice amount of topline.

If you want him to lose fat and gain topline you will have to cut out calories but make sure he is recieving adequate protein to build muscle, then it's exercise to build muscle and lose fat. How about a chaff combined with a balancer which should provide him with all the vits, mins and protein he requires for his size when fed at the recommended rate.

If you think that will decrease his calorie intake too much compared to what he is on (depends on quantities but remember spring grass will be on the way!) then maybe take out your balancer and conditioning feed and replace them with the recommended amount of a good quality leisure type feed so high fibre cubes or horse and pony cubes from Spillers or D&H or Baileys or something like that - if you feed those at the recommended rate then he should be getting all his vits, mins and protein.

well, seeing as you are on topspec already, how about tweaking it a little and using antilam, topspec high fibre cubes, instead of the cool condition?? that should bring the calories down a little but still give him enough sparkle and topline!!

Topline will ONLY come from work, feed has nothing to do with topline.

Just cut out the Conditioning feed, and give only a small amount of balancer. In fact I would swap it for D&H Suregrow...........exactly the same as Topspec, but half the price and a few less calories.
