Im getting a 15.2hh irish draught x thoroughbred at the begginig of march and dont know whats best to feed her any ideas?? she will be living out and only being ridden on weekends and maybe twice a week in the summer.

I would find out what she is being fed at the moment and stick to that initially. You can always increase/decrease amounts as necessary or even change entirely if it doesn't seem to suit her, but I've always found it the best place to start!

What is her condition like at the moment? Do you know what the previous owner is feeding her?

I would usually start with a high fibre, low starch diet to begin with. Something along the lines of:

Dengie Hi Fi Original or Spillers Cool Fibre
Spillers High Fibre Cubes or Allen and Paige Fast Fibre (The latter being my personal fave!)

Then if she later requires more energy perhaps changing to something like:

Spillers Hore and Pony Nuts or Cool Mix or Allen and Paige Ride and Relax.

If she requires more energy still then I would look for something with a higher DE/Calories.

If she is a good doer then she may be better off with a low calorie chaff such as Spiller Happy Hoof or Dengie Hi Fi Lite with a balancer?

Hope this helps?

Agree with the others you are best to find out what she is being fed at the moment, and if that suits her (ie keeps her in good condition with the correct amount of energy), then stick to that!

If for some reason you cannot find out what she is being fed, then unless she is very overweight or underweight, I would start with giving her as much hay as she can eat and just a vit/min supplement such as Benevit or Equivite mixed in with some chaff or speedibeet. You can then monitor her weight (using a weigh tape once a week) and energy levels and adjust her diet from there.

My ID x TB is very old now, but he has always been a very good doer. In spring summer we only ever gave him a scoop of cool mix even when he was working hard as it was all he needed (plus 24hr turnout). In winter we used to give him bran, sugarbeet and cool mix. Now he gets bran, sugarbeet and 16+ twice daily all year round (smaller portions in summer).

Def find out what she's on already and what sort of appetite etc she has, I hope she's like mine so she's low maintenance for you!!!!
