Got a new boy yesterday, 7 years old and 16.3 ISH but he is rather fat and lacking in topline and condition as he has been doing very little work for the past few months.

Recommendations of what to feed but not very expensive please!

To be honest, if he's new, I would put him on either nothing other than hay/grass or the bare minimum- ie chaff and some vits/mins.

Get to know him first without risking any extra energy. Once your happy then go adding in what you like, although he looks to have good condition currently

I personally wouldn't make too many changes to begin with. I would start by pretty much feeding him what he also got from his previous owner. If he is too fat, I would gradually reduce the quantity of whatever concentrates he's getting over the course of a week or so. I don't know where you are at and whether your horse gets much pasture time, but this time of year, the grass here in the Netherlands is not nearly as nutricious as it was April - June, so I would also feed large quantities of quality hay and possibly extra vitamins / minerals if you feel he needs it. And then I think it's a matter of looking into the various types of food, paying close attention to your horse, take into consideration what it is you'll be doing with him and make an educated decision :) . Good luck with the new boy!
