Did some loading pratice with my yearling Boots today and used some pony nuts as a reward. The loading pratice went really well and i probly didnt need the food anyway but wanted it to be a good experence for her.

When i bought Boots 7 weeks ago the people told me she had been spoilt with food as a baby and had got in to a habbit of bitting. Over the last 6 months she hasnt been fed from the hand and has got alot better, she has only tried to bite me once in 7 weeks.

After rewarding her with the pony nuts a few times today she was all over me and kept trying to go for my hands, not teeth beard but still trying to like mouth my hands.

I knew before i started with the food that it was a bad idea with her history but wanted to encourage her in to the trailer and wanted a nice instant reward for her. Grr. Should have just done without it i guess.

Anyway, I should be able to overcome her going for my hands now but what should i use as an alternative reward for her? She dos like a good scratch but is that really effective enought to reward and reinforce good behaviour?

A pat and a kind word! Horses dont relate to the equation - 'good behaviour =food/treat ' and usually ends up teaching them bad manners. My filly gets a pat and a vocal encouragement.
