I am going to view a rising 4 year old tomorrow and wondered if anybody had any tips or advice?

I have only viewed horses for loan before not to buy as my current horse was originally my loan horse.

I want something that will be an alrounder for riding club activities. I realise I won't be able to see this from a youngster that isn't jumping yet etc but what to look for?

Thanks x

When I have looked at youngsters I have looked at them in stable being faffed about with, conformation and I have depending on age seen them loose schooled and loose jumped

I would just look at all the usual stuff conformation, movement ect, my main thing I would look for in a young horse is behaviour and temperment if the horse is calm and quiet training will be made a lot easier, I wouldn't concentrate on how well he rides because this can be improved. I would ask when did he start training and try to judge in the space of time he has been worked how quickly he has come along . Hope this helps .

Has he been backed yet?
I went to see a youngster (3 year old) on Tuesday- first saw her in the stable, ran my hands all over her body (legs etc) to check for her reaction to being touched as well as to feel for any lumps or bumps.
Then had her led out and trotted up in hand on a hard surface to check her soundness and gait.
Then loosed her off in the school to see her walk/trot/canter and loose jump.
We then saw her tied up (quite important imo for a young horse to tie up sensibly).
